Year Five’s Marvellous Maths

By Mr G Mcintosh7th December 2015

Year Five have been reading the book, ‘If the World Were a Village’. It explains world statistics by reducing the difficult numbers (millions and billions of people) down by scale, as if there were only 100 people in the world. The children were fascinated by many of the facts in the book, such as how many out of 100 have access to regular food and clean water and also how many have computers or even just electricity!

Each group used their knowledge of charts and graphs to decide themselves how to present the information to the rest of the class. They had unlimited access to the art cupboard and the sky was the limit!

I was very impressed by the ideas developed by each group and also by their group presentations. Marvellous maths in action!

There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom…

No, there’s not really…it’s the name of a brilliant book that Year Five really enjoyed studying earlier in the term. I’ve come across some photos of drama activities we did during the unit and thought I’d share them so the class can look back over where we started this term. Well done, guys.

choir ‘Beat Burn’ Begin the Christmas Season in Style…

By Mr G Mcintosh7th December 2015

This week our resident choir, Beat Burn, gave shoppers in Morrisons a bit of festive cheer. They sang 18 songs, ranging from traditional carols to fun action songs, with enthusiasm and Christmas spirit. It marked the start of the busy group’s festive season. Other highlights coming up soon include Tesco’s, the Metro Centre, Bamburgh Grove, St Peter’s and also St Paul’s. Our wonderful new T-shirts looked fantastic and the behaviour of the children was impeccable. Since the performance we have been practising even more (with chocolate treats courtesy of Morrisons) so our next event promises to be even better – we hope you can join us!

Year Five Visit Tyneside Cinema

By Mr G Mcintosh7th December 2015

On Wednesday, Year Five visited Tyneside Cinema, in Newcastle. It was to be an historical-based visit, discovering more about the history of newsreel and the cinema itself, linked to our World War Two topic. Interestingly, it took a very different turn… The evil time traveller, Kronos, whom we have been battling in our ICT sessions, turned up! We had to become honorary IMUTT agents and help Ava Scott to defeat Kronos once and for all! Things were not looking good for a while as the cinema gradually transformed into a KronoPlex. However with the children’s help, Ava eventually managed to return the baddie to his rightful place, in prison in 2025!

After all of the excitement, our class were more than happy to chill out in the afternoon with our very own private screening of Nativity. Popcorn, juice and a bit of singing put everyone in a great mood!

The behaviour of the class was complemented by a passerby and I must say, I agree! They were a credit to our school and I was proud to be their teacher. The only problem is how we’re going to top this with an even better trip..!

Huge well done to all of the children who participated in our annual Spelling Bee; it takes courage to stand up in front of an audience of over 100!

After a hard fought battle, Belsay were victorious and added their first trophy to their House display! Well done, Belsay!

Lennon the Life Saver

By Mr G Mcintosh24th November 2015

Over the summer, Lennon attended a ‘swim safe’ session run by the RNLI, he enjoyed it so much that he returned every week and even had his picture in the paper!

Lennon has continued to enjoy learning about the life boats and saving lives and has been attending the ‘Rookie Lifeguards’ training each weekend.

Yesterday Lennon came to me and very politely and eloquently explained how the Sunderland Life Boat centre covers a huge stretch of our coastline and how he would like to raise some funds to support this.  Lennon will be providing small jars that he would like each class member to fill with 5p coins which he will then return to the lifeboat station.

There is also a collection bucket in the year three class for other loose change.

I think it is brilliant that Lennon has taken it upon himself to organise some fundraising for a cause he believes so strongly in.  I know that we will all support him!

The Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle

By Mr G Mcintosh24th November 2015

It was a cold and windy start but we soon warmed up! We started our journey outside of St Mary’s Heritage. Richard explained how the police man had walked down the street where we were standing and spotted the fire for the first time.

We continued our journey along the Quayside crossing from Gateshead to Newcastle, just like the people of 1854. We acted out different scenes as if we had all gone back in time!!

We finished off our day by exploring St Mary’s Heritage and changing the lyrics of London’s Burning to Gateshead’s Burning and The Quayside’s Burning, then performed them to an audience.

The Great British Menu!

By Mr G Mcintosh18th November 2015

Last week’s lunch menu was hugely exciting, the cooks really pulled out all of the stops and made the children’s lunch time an amazing experience.

The team in the kitchen rustled up some old fashioned British classics, I can vouch for how delicious the corned beef pie was!

That History Bloke

By Mr G Mcintosh18th November 2015

Wow! What an afternoon Year 2 have had! Richard Stevenson (That History Bloke) came to Year 2 to teach us all about the Victorian times. We studied old photographs and artefacts, which helped us to understand what the time was like when the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle started.

We ended the afternoon with a fantastic drama session, where we acted as workers that spotted the fire! We can’t wait to visit the Quayside on Friday to learn more about the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle.

Great fun with poetry!

By Mr G Mcintosh16th November 2015

The whole school had a very entertaining morning today when we welcomed poet Paul Cookson into school. He made us all laugh with his reading of his hilarious poems about teachers and dads! All the children joined in with actions and they enjoyed his songs accompanied by rock and roll music played on his ukulele. imageimage
