Casting thumbs

By Mr G Mcintosh5th February 2016

Wow! What a great time we had at science club on Tuesday. We were learning how to cast  thumbs using dental alginate and casting powder.

First we had to mix one cap of dental alginate with water and stir with a tongue depressor.

Next we had to put the mixture into the thumb pot and wait for the mixture to turn from pink to white. Once it had set we could take our thumbs out.

We then had to mix two caps of  casting powder with water and fill the holes left by the thumbs.

We had to wait 10 mins for the mixture to set. 🙂

Adam’s was amazing!

Sing Up Day

By Mr G Mcintosh4th February 2016

Yesterday was the national ‘sing up’ day and, as you would expect, we got heavily involved at Bede Burn!

The children were visited by Charlotte and Jack from the Sing Up organisation and they spent the morning visiting the classes and singing with each year group.  The teachers stayed in their rooms and each class visited to sing a song in every room in the school.  We then gathered together to sing the ‘Sing Up Anthem’ in the hall.

The day was rounded off by our attempt at a flash mob song after school!

For those of you on twitter, check out @SingUpChar she has posted some very complimentary tweets about her day with us!

There is a gallery of photographs here.

Hopefully there will be some video clips below this post soon!

Burns Celebration

By Mr G Mcintosh25th January 2016

“Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,

Great chieftain o the puddin’ – race,”

What a fantastic lunch time.  Our cook, Mrs Caffery, brought an enormous haggis down from her last visit back home to Scotland, ready to help our children learn a little more about Burns’ night.

We had a traditional piper escort the haggis into the hall, I even managed to recite Burns’ ‘Address to a Haggis’ in a Scottish/pirate/Geordie accent!

The children were all able to sample the haggis and I think lots of them were proud of themselves for trying something new and many more were surprised at how much they liked the taste!

Everyone had a great time and we are really looking forward to the next themed meals.  Look out for a Chinese New Year theme and a Viking Feast!

By Mr G Mcintosh21st January 2016

This week, children from years 5, 3 and 2 have had the opportunity to visit the OpenZone and take part in workshops about developing code for computing.

It has been a fantastic success and the staff and children have returned enthused about teaching coding back at school.

The Openzone have posted about the week on their own website, check it out here:

Detective searching

By Mr G Mcintosh21st January 2016

We enjoyed yesterday’s session collecting a number of small items in the same way as the police, using  tweezers and an evidence pot.

We then took part in a microscope quiz, where the children had to guess what evidence had been enlarged underneath the microscope. As you can see from the photograph below the children found the picture of the finger nail quite revolting.

Mnemonic Fun

By Mr G Mcintosh8th January 2016

Today was our first lesson learning about Around the World. We found out we have a special book that helps us locate the countries and oceans of the world, it is called an Atlas. We used the atlases to find the 7 continents and 5 oceans and labelled them on a map of the world.

To help us remember the seven continents we made up our own fun mnemonic:

Never

Sing

Anything

Annoying

Ever

Again

Amy!

Welcome Back

By Mr G Mcintosh7th January 2016

Welcome back! I hope you have  all enjoyed the holidays and thank you so much for all of your kind gifts.

Our topic this term is Around the World. We will by going on a whistle-stop tour of the seven continents of the world, and visiting a country on each continent to explore their features, people and landmarks.  We will learn where the seven continents are on a map and undertake a variety of fun activities to help us learn more about each one. We will also be linking Art and DT to this wonderful topic, please see topic web for more information.

Our literacy work this term will focus on the exciting world of traditional tales, giving the children the challenge of creating their own traditional tale. We will continue to focus on our phonics and spelling to improve both our reading and our writing. Phonics Play is a great website which has free games and activities you may find useful.. www.phonicsplay.co.uk. Please see topic web for further information about what we shall be covering in English throughout the Spring Term.

In maths we will continue to develop our understanding of number, addition and subtraction. I would really appreciate any help and support you could give to your child in their understanding of money, time and multiplication (x2, x5 and x10).

Thank you!

Mrs Franchi and Mrs Kiely
