Macbeth doth come!

By Mr G Mcintosh26th February 2016

Year five have been enjoying our first week studying Shakespeare’s spooky tale of Macbeth! So far we have done some whole-class drama, retold the tale and worked in groups to re-enact Act 1, Scene 1. You can see the results of this in the clips below!

We are going to develop this into a written narrative soon…I can’t wait to see the results!

Year Five’s volcanic eruptions!

By Mr G Mcintosh12th February 2016

Year five are enjoying their studies on South America and this week we were learning about volcanoes (South America boasts the tallest volcano in the World!)

We made our own volcanoes using plastic bottles, papier mache and a few crossed fingers!

We erupted them using a mix of bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and red food colouring…take a look at the gallery to see the results!

Pancake Tuesday

By Mr G Mcintosh10th February 2016

This afternoon we had great fun eating pancakes and tasting different toppings. We tried pancakes with chocolate, lemon, strawberry jam, sugar and syrup. Our class favourite was chocolate and a close second was strawberry jam.

We linked pancakes and maths together by practising cutting our pancakes into halves and quarters. We are also going to complete a tally chart and a pictogram to  show our findings.

Before we ate our yummy pancakes, we researched pancakes around the world. We found out some people have fancy dress pancake races, whilst flipping pancakes in the air.  We also found out the Swedish call Pancake Day ‘Fettsdagen’, which means ‘Fat Tuesday’. They eat a pastry called Semla instead of pancakes.

Fun Fact

Did you know…

…the biggest pancake in the world measured over 15 metres long!

Year 6 – Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz

By Mr G Mcintosh8th February 2016

I must share with you some of the work in English that Year 6 have been doing recently. We have spent the last few weeks reading ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz – a novel about a teenager reluctantly recruited into MI6 following the murder of his uncle. The children have loved reading this book at every opportunity and I have had to be careful to stop reading in order to fit in some maths lessons!

So far the children have written a diary entry about the day of Alex’s uncles funeral, an explanation text describing a gadget they have designed for a teenage spy and an accompanying persuasive letter to Smithers – the books equivalent of ‘Q’ in James Bond.

They have analysed the language and word choices of the author that created tension and atmosphere and constructed a line graph to show the most and least tense moments in a very exciting chapter amongst other activities.

We hope to write our own exciting short story chronicling a new adventure in the life of Alex Rider. We will be sharing them with you on our website – look out for them!

Thurston – Y6

By Mr G Mcintosh8th February 2016

The majority of Year 6 returned yesterday from an action-packed week at Thurston on Coniston Water in the Lake District. The children took part in a variety of activities including ghyll-scrambling, mountain climbing, canoeing, rock climbing and walking through disused slate mines. All pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and new challenges were met with enthusiasm and a touch of bravery from some.

All thoroughly enjoyed themselves and did not stop for a single moment from the second their eyes opened at 7.15 until they fell asleep around 10.30 pm. As well as the physical activities, the children loved socialising with old friends from Bede Burn and new friends from Hedworthfield. Barn time where the children could play pool, table football and Connect 4 and generally socialise was a big hit. Meal times were a popular part of the day and the children wolfed down bangers and mash, chicken curry, pasta bolognese and a roast dinner.

A fantastic trip was had by all and all children were a credit to you. I took hundreds of photographs and will upload them to the website as soon as possible – watch this space!
