Reminders
Forest School is on Wednesday afternoons.
P.E. is on Thursday afternoons.
Wizzy Work (homework) is given on a Wednesday to be returned by the
following Monday.
Reading books should be sent into school on your child’s designated reading day.

Requests
Please make sure your child’s name is on all uniform and PE kit.

Our topics
Autumn 1 ~ Do You Want to Be Friends?
Autumn 2 ~ Are We There Yet?
Spring 1 ~ What Happens When I Fall Asleep?
Spring 2 ~ Who Lives in a Rock Pool?
Summer 1 ~ Are Carrots Orange?
Summer 2 ~Will You Read Me a Story?

Who Lives in a Rock Pool?
We are starting our topic with a visit to the Blue Reef Aquarium for some hands
on experience to find out about the creatures that live in and around the sea
before using a range of resources to find out about the creatures that interest
us most. The topic also lends itself to lots of creative and imaginative play
opportunities developed through stories, poems and of course children’s own
ideas and imagination.
In phonics we will continue to reinforce letter sounds through word building and
blending. The next phase in Letters and Sounds focuses on introducing vowel
digraphs and trigraphs with shared reading sessions to reinforce keywords and
apply decoding skills.
In number time we are hoping to extend children’s confidence in recognising
numbers up to and beyond 20 through counting games, matching activities and
sequencing tasks. Through practical sessions, we will be developing addition and
subtraction strategies including counting on and counting back. Problem solving
activities will be linked to measures including size, weight and capacity.
Opportunities for investigative play and child initiated learning will continue to
be a central part of daily classroom activities.
Thank you for your support.

Y6 : Ice-Skating at Centre For Life

By Mr G Mcintosh16th March 2018

Last Wednesday, Year 6 travelled by Metro up to the Centre for Life for an exciting start to their new topic: Frozen Kingdom. After getting ice-skates on and a brief introductory ice-skating lesson, Y6 plus Mrs Todd, Mrs Arthur and Mrs O’Neill took to the ice. It was a shaky start for many who clung on to the barrier for dear life however, everyone who found it tricky persevered and by the end everyone was skating around the rink independently.

To the relief of all of the staff, all children got off the rink without injury and many children declared it ‘the best trip ever’. Aron even asked if, instead of going bowling after the SATs in Spring, we could do ice-skating again.

A tour of the Centre for Life followed including: a ride on the 4D Polar Express themed motion ride; a trip through space in the planetarium; a science show and time to investigate the brain and discovery zones.

A brilliant trip was had by all and behaviour was as impeccable as ever!

Children in Need Day 2017

By Mr G Mcintosh17th November 2017

Well, what a fantastic day we’ve had! We were dressed up, with our favourite teddies in tow, for a great dance in the hall…all of the teachers joined in and had a great time!

We also had 5 knitted Pudsey Bear toys per class to give away, lovingly hand-made by our very own Mrs Peacock.

We raised £268.35 towards this fantastic charity, helping children far and wide. The full selection of photos can be seen in our website gallery.

Well done everyone!

Victorian Slums project

By Mr G Mcintosh12th October 2017

Year 6 have been learning about Victorian slums as part of their ILP. All of the children did a fabulous job. Mrs Todd and I were so impressed by one in particular that we asked the creator to write a blog about it (below). Keep up the great work!

Mrs Faulkner

‘In class, we were asked to create a slum house which was based on the 19th century Victorian slums.  I have designed an alleyway which has three buildings made into five small living areas.  To create these tiny homes I have used: cardboard, boxes, tubes, string, matchsticks, material, tea bags and weeds.  People lived in dirty, crowded conditions and many shared beds.  Times were very hard; people had very little money and poor hygiene. I have created a washing line for each slum to share, with clothes and bedding on.  The pathways are all dirty.  Everything I have used has been recycled, including used tea bags, which I have steeped material in to give a used and filthy look!’

Day 4 with Year 2!

By Mr G Mcintosh23rd June 2017

Last week Year 2 had a fantastic day with our visitors.

First we decided to create a lot of mess and have a lot of fun! We made play dough. We had to work in groups, sort the instructions and then carry out the instructions. It started off tricky at first, but once we all helped each other we got there in the end. Some of our play dough went a bit runny. Oops! So we had to add more flour to make it thicker. Once we had made it, we shared it out in our groups and made lots of different things. Some of our visitors showed us how to make Chinese dumplings. They were nice and easy to make.

Afterwards we settled with some art and craft. We did some mindfulness colouring in and then followed on with collage work in the style of Henri Matisse. It was great seeing the different colours we could make from overlapping tissue paper. Everybody enjoyed it. We used different techniques to add to our collage effect. Some children cut up bits of paper, while others teared the paper. Some children shredded theirs and others scrunched it up to make a 3D collage effect. Bede Burn definitely has some artists in the making! Have a look at some of our pictures from our fun filled day!

Year 6 welcomes out Chinese Visitors

By Mr G Mcintosh13th June 2017

Today, Year 6 spent the whole day entertaining our friends from Meiuyan School in China. Nineteen of the students aged between 8 and 11 are visiting us for the week and we were looking forward to our day with them.

We had a great day and made some new friends. We started the day with some short maths activities where all children were challenged to find all possible 16 quadrilaterals that could possibly be made on a 3 x 3 grid. Then they had to calculate cubed numbers from 10 cubed to 20 cubed and place these numbers in a number crossword.

The day continued with a lesson on Chinese writing and then we went on to draw self portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. However, by far the most fun part of the day was our PE games in the hall. Our visitors enjoyed playing the hoop game, lumps, pirates and colour run.

Their teacher said they had all thoroughly enjoyed the day and I was extremely proud of all of Y6 who welcomed all of our visitors with open arms. Loud goodbyes rang out on both sides of the hall at 3.15 and I know the children are looking forward to seeing more of their new friends before they leave us on Tuesday.

Give and Gain Day

By Mr G Mcintosh30th May 2017

We were lucky enough to take part in ‘Give and Gain Day’, organised by Mike from the charity ‘Business in the Community’. Mike organised volunteers from a number of local businesses to come down to school and help us to improve. This included joining in with assembly, reading with children, being interviewed by children for a newspaper article and also giving some of our furniture a lick of paint! The rain did it’s best to dampen the volunteers’ spirits, but they carried on regardless and managed to brighten up our parents’ shelter, friendship bench and picnic benches in the peace garden.

Our children loved having the volunteers in school, and asked them some great questions. We thanked them all for giving up their time to help Bede Burn, and I’d like to repeat that sentiment here – thank you very much to Mike, Business in the Community and all of the volunteers.

Easter Egg Winners!

By Mr G Mcintosh6th April 2017

We had an egg-celent assembly yesterday – and I’m not yolking… As always, the children of Bede Burn went above and beyond with their Easter Egg creations. The only tricky bit was choosing only three winners per class! The lucky winners’ creations can be seen below and also in the ‘galleries’ section. They won some Easter chocolate and, crucially, points for their house!

Well done one and all.
