As part of our OPAL play initiative, we have introduced ‘Wheelie Wednesday’. Every Wednesday, children are welcome to bring their scooters and helmets to school to enjoy at lunchtime. this has been a great success and we have been very impressed at how well the children have approached this. Wheelie Well Done!
Welcome to Spring Term in Year 6 – a busy and important term for all.
Our new term begins with a trip to Nissan as part of their Monozukuri sessions. Y6 will have a tour of the training plant and be encouraged to take part in a Lego challenge and other activities.
Our new topic this term is called ‘Frozen Kingdom’ – it is a geography led topic during which we will learn about the polar regions. We will use atlases and globes to map the regions and find out about the landscape and geographical features and we will also compare and contrast the North and South Poles. We will study polar animals and learn about how they have adapted to thrive in their habitats. This work will culminate in a piece of writing where all Year 6 pupils will create and write about a hybrid or fictional polar animal. During this topic, we will study the Northern Lights and use the images as inspiration to create our own artwork as well as studying Inuit art and creating block paintings based on this. Polar exploration will feature heavily and the exploits of Scott of the Antarctic will be studied.
To complement the Frozen Kingdom topic, English lessons – both reading and writing will be based around ‘Brightstorm’ by Vashti Hardy which is an adventure story following the adventures of siblings who travel to the South Polaris in search of their explorer father.
In Maths, Y6 will study decimals and fraction, decimal, percentage equivalences as well as starting to study algebra.
PE will continue to take place on a Thursday – please have PE kits in school for this day.
Welcome to a new school year and welcome to Year 6!
It was lovely to see the children back at school today looking fresh and ready to learn for this important year at Bede Burn.
Children are welcome to enter the Year 6 classroom through the classroom door on a morning and if you need to speak to me, please feel free to catch me on the door at drop off time.
Our timetable this half term has a few extras including Forest School that will take place on Wednesday mornings. As usual, children should come to school dressed in old warm, waterproof clothes with suitable footwear. An extra pair of shoes to change into for indoor use would be appreciated!
PE this term will take place on Thursdays and alternate Fridays; it is probably best to leave the PE kit in school for the whole half term or to bring it in on Monday mornings and take home on Friday afternoons if you’d prefer to wash it more often. The Thursday PE slot will be taken by an external hockey coach.
As last year, homework will be given out on a Wednesday on Seesaw and will be expected to be completed by the following Monday morning. Preferably, homework should be recorded on or uploaded to Seesaw unless other instructions are given. Children will have reading and spelling and an English or maths activity every week. It is essential that homework is completed – if you have any problems either technical or with the work content, please feel free to contact by via the Year 6 door most mornings or send a message via Seesaw.
Project work for the whole of the Autumn term will be based around the topic title ‘Hola Mexico’. It is a fun and exciting topic filled with art, music and DT opportunities as well as history and geography objectives. Children will learn about the history of chocolate alongside the history of the Ancient Maya and will study many aspects of physical and human geography including a study of the Chihuahua desert, climate and holiday destinations. We will also study the famous Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo and make and taste delicious Mexican food from tortillas to tacos complemented by a delicious agua fresca drink made with limes and brown sugar.
This project will complement our novel study in English which is ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar and writing opportunities will include writing in character as the main character, Stanley Yelnats and writing a report on the yellow-spotted lizards. Writing opportunities will also come from ‘Hola Mexico’ and will include a balanced arguement debating both sides of Donald Trump’s decision to build a wall at the border between Mexico and the USA!
I look forward to working with you over the forthcoming year and I am sure it will be a successful one for all children in Year 6.
Mrs Todd
On Friday 7th June, Year 5 parents were invited into school to work alongside their children. The first activity came from resources from the Week of Inspirational Maths – parents and children first watched a short video aimed at raising awareness of different approaches to maths reasoning and problem-solving. Then, parents and children worked together, using resources, to puzzle out possible solutions to a coin-related challenge. Excellent team-work and logical working was witnessed. Congratulations go to Hayden, Matthew, Lewis and Matthew and Lewis’ dad who found the solution first.
After that, the group travelled back to Tudor times and took part in a few Tudor past-times: they took part in a dance workshop which was made up of several Henry VIII’s activities including tennis and jousting; they also played ’31’ a classic Tudor dice game and ‘Nine Men’s Morris’ which is a Tudor board game and enjoyed learning a classic Tudor branle dance.
Both children and adults enjoyed their morning.
A fantastic day was had to kick-start our Frozen Kingdom topic. Year 6 visited the Centre for Life where we all went ice-skating and then visited the centre itself. A great day!
The majority of Y6 had a wonderful yet very snowy and cold week at our outdoor residential centre on the shores of Coniston Water: Thurston. All children took part in activities such as ghyll-scrambling (yes, really in the icy water); long walks up snow covered mountains; rock-climbing on the indoor climbing wall and canoeing across to the other side of Coniston Water amongst other activities.
Our evenings were filled with games such as hide and seek in the dark and sardines and spending time with old and new friends in the barn.
We had a fantastic time and the behaviour from all was impeccable!
Another wonderful week in the beautiful Lake District: thank you Y6.
