Sing Up Day

By Mr G Mcintosh30th March 2017

On Wednesday 22nd March, it was international Sing Up day. Schools across the globe celebrated by singing this year’s Sing Up anthem, ‘Let Love Shine Through’. We went one step further and had a singing afternoon!

We started off with a sing-song in the hall, singing some of our favourite songs. Some required pupils from different classes to sing different parts, all coming together in beautiful harmony, which the children coped tremendously well with.

We then sang this year’s anthem, which is all about the importance of understanding that everyone is different, and that is a good thing as it brings a rich diversity and eclectic mix to life. We filmed our singing efforts and sent it off to the Sing Up staff. Last year’s Bede Burn video was used as part of this year’s music video, sent to all schools using Sing Up, so we have high hopes that we will reach the same dizzy heights this year!

After that, the children moved around the school in classes, singing a song with each teacher all the way from Reception up to Year 6, before finally coming back together to surprise our parents and grandparents with a ‘flash mob’ at home time.

We really value opportunities like this when subjects such as music get a spotlight placed upon them, and children have a chance to develop and display their talents. Singing as part of a large group has also been shown to raise self-esteem in children and promote a happy atmosphere. There is something very inclusive and comforting in being one of over 200 voices, all working together to make a beautiful sound. And, of course, it was jolly good fun too…

Check out our gallery of super singers. Look out for the pictures of our staff, all mid-song!

By Mr G Mcintosh30th March 2017

On Friday 24th March, we wore red to raise money for Red Nose Day. The children had a great time and we raised a total of £190!

Thank you to everyone for making a great effort for this worthwhile charity, which does so much to help people in the UK and beyond.

World Book Day

By Mr G Mcintosh14th March 2017

Here at Bede Burn we had a fantastic time on World Book Day! Each child was given a choice of activities to join in with. All of our class teachers and myself chose a picture book that we love, to share with the children. We read it together and then did some linked activities, including drama, art and design. The children looked fabulous in their book costumes (as did the grownups) and we thoroughly enjoyed celebrating books.

Check out our full gallery using the drop-down menu.

Well done everyone!

Our new Vision Statement is here!

By Mr G Mcintosh18th January 2017

Parents/Carers –

You may remember me writing to you all in the Autumn term, asking you to jot down words/phrases in response to a few questions (What we want the children to feel at school, what we valued, and so on).

I also asked all of the staff, Governors and the pupils the same questions, correlated the results and used everyone’s ideas to write our vision statement.

The result is a vision that is shared by everyone in our school community – we are all a part of it and can be proud to call it our vision of Bede Burn.

I hope you like it as much as I do!

Thank you for your contributions.

I’ve also uploaded our Classroom Code, which we designed in Autumn. It is displayed in all classrooms and explains our ethos of how we want our children to learn.

Year 2 – Spring Term

By Mr G Mcintosh12th January 2017

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and a great start to the New Year.

Let’s have a look at what’s planned for this half term…

During English we will be doing lots of work around the theme of ‘the dark’, inspired by the fantastic story by Lemony Snicket. This will give us plenty of opportunities to explore story writing, set the scene with some drama, become poets and other valuable experiences, such as addressing our fears. This will also lead onto other books surrounding the darkness, light and fears. If you have any books that you think might be useful, we would love to share them in our class.

As for Maths, we will be covering measurement of money and geometry in the upcoming weeks. During these lessons we will also be continuing to work on our 2, 3, and 5 times tables and revisiting some tricky methods we used last term, such as the number line.

In Topic this term we will begin looking at ‘Around the World’. This topic is quite broad, so we will begin by looking at China in depth, finding out more about their country and culture, where they are located in the world, learning lots of interesting facts, looking at various resources and tasting foods from other countries. This will then be followed on by exploring Africa and Australia. We will also be welcoming a surprise visitor during our topic.

In P.E we will be practising different types of invasion games. P.E will be on a Monday and Thursday. Please remember to bring your P.E kit into school for the term. Just a reminder, P.E kits need to include a school P.E top, black shorts and plimsolls. A water bottle is always recommended also.

Throughout Science this term we will be looking at ‘The Environment’. We will explore environmental issues that surround us, and how we can make simple changes to live more sustainable lives. The themes that will be covered include endangered animals, recycling, energy and climate change. We will investigate these areas by conducting simple tests and experiments, to find ways to overcome some of these issues.

In Computing this term, we will continue to do work on coding, using Discovery Coding. This is a different website for the children to explore, consisting of games in which the children will need to use coding to break through each stage. It looks super fun! There will also be some lessons on e-safety and how to stay safe whilst online.

Music this term will be linked in with the Topic. We will be learning and exploring songs from other countries, using instruments to create our own versions. We will also be using a website called Charanga to explore different pitches and sounds.

During R.E this term, we will be discussing why the Bible is special to Christians, learning about their beliefs and how God is shown in the Bible.

Meanwhile in PSHE we will be starting off with ‘Going for Goals’ as a topic. This will consist of learning about how to take responsibility, persistence and waiting for what we want, resilience and bouncing back, and finally setting and achieving our goals.

Homework will still be a weekly requirement. It will be handed out on a Wednesday and will need to be returned by the following Monday. Children are still expected to practice their common exception words and KIRFS when they have the chance.

Reading books will need to be taken home and returned to school on a daily basis. It is expected that some reading is carried out every night. In the reading book bags, I have also included a bookmark which has some key questions on. These can be used when a child is reading a book to ensure they can comprehend the basis of the story, or to support them in developing that skill. If you need another copy, do not hesitate to ask.

I hope that covers everything! If not, feel free to get in touch and I will be more than happy to answer any queries.

I look forward to starting 2017 with everybody.

Miss Reece.

Year Two

Spring term in Year 6

3rd January 2017Mr G Mcintosh

Welcome back to school in a brand new year – 2017! Thank you very much for all presents and cards that I received from the children for Christmas and I hope you all had a fun and restful Christmas.
The Spring term looks like it is going to be very busy. We are going to be working towards the ever-looming SATs that will take place in May. This term will require a lot of hard work and dedication from all children and I am sure that they will work to the best of their ability and reap the rewards.
In English, our studies will be focused on the book ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz about the adventures of Alex Rider who is recruited to join MI6 while only a teenager. Through our study of this text we will explore a whole text through reading activities, drama activities and the children will be showing off their writing talents in many genres e.g. diary entries, explanation and persuasion. In maths, the first half of this term will be focused on decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion and measurement. We will continue to hold booster sessions on Thursday mornings starting from 8am.
Our topic this half term is ‘Marvellous Maps’ a geography based unit which allows children to explore the range of maps available to geographers and to develop their understanding of the key features of maps. They will study a range of maps and atlases, including digital maps, and compare their features. The will learn to use the eight compass points to give directions and give grid references to locate places on a map. By comparing maps of the same place, children will learn about the way that places have changed over time. We will link our work in ‘Stormbreaker’ to this topic and use maps – both paper-based and online – to locate and find out more about key settings from the novel which is set in many locations throughout London and Cornwall. World maps will be used to locate the settings of future Alex Rider missions that take place all over Europe and the wider world.
In ICT we will be continue to practise coding through Discovery Coding.
This term PE will take place on Thursday afternoons but it would be a good idea for the children to have a kit in school at all times as we will sometimes be adding in some extra sessions if we need to ‘blow off steam’ after working so hard in the lead up to the SATs.
Thank you very much for your support since the start of Year 6 – I am sure by working as a team – children, parents and school – we can make this term a huge success,

Mrs Todd
