Spring term – Year 2

2nd April 2015Mr G Mcintosh

WOW! What a busy spring term Year 2 have had… first we found out all about the magnificent Walt Disney, then designed and created our own Disney finger and glove puppets. We were so good we managed to sew our puppets using the running and over stitch!

We then moved onto our second topic Africa! We researched the different African animals and wrote our own non chronological reports about them. Did you know cheetahs use their tails to steer their bodies when they are trying to catch other animals? We also looked more at African art, and made African necklaces and our own tinga tinga animals.

We loved singing ‘I just can’t wait to be king’ for our Grandparents at our annual Grandparents concert. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! 🙂

Welcome back!

6th January 2015A Lenney

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all. First of all can I say a huge thank you for the lovely cards and gifts, you are very kind and I am a very lucky teacher to work with such wonderful children.

There are a couple of important changes to note about our timetable this term. Due to our cheerleading sessions coming to an end, we have moved our Monday PE session to Tuesday, the Thursday session will stay the same until half term after which we begin swimming sessions, I will send you more details about that nearer the time. This has also meant a change in our spelling lesson, it will now take place on Tuesday, this means that the children will need to bring their spelling books on Tuesdays rather than Monday.

Maths work this term will continue to develop the children’s understanding of number, telling the time, measuring length and weight, as well as using their knowledge to solve problems. In English we will be looking at Ug by Raymond Briggs, learning new spelling rules and continuing to develop and improve reading skills.

As you can see, we have a busy term ahead of us. As ever, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you for your continuing support,

A Lenney

A visit from Gobi…

21st November 2014Mr G Mcintosh

IMG_0691 IMG_0692 IMG_0688 IMG_0690Following his first visit, over 18 months ago, Gobi Ranganathan from the Charity Shine came

back to pay us a visit.

After a very long journey Gobi eventually made it to Jarrow in time for assembly where he told the children about his sporting life playing badminton and about his charity work for Shine.

The children enjoyed seeing the medals from the World, European and British championships and Gobi’s national shirt.  With the news that badminton has been recently classified as a Paralympics sport, we hope to see Gobi competing in Tokyo in 2020!

House Mathematics Competition

20th November 2014Mr G Mcintosh

This morning, the four houses competed for the second house trophy of the year, The house Multiplication Tables Trophy!

Each team consisted of one child from each year group from 3 – 6.  They then competed in a series of mathematical, multiplication based challenges, racing against each other.  Things were very close after the third round and got closer still when Miss Lenney added on the infant scores.  To gain points for their house, each infant child was given a mathematical challenge to complete at home, if they brought it back in they were awarded a point for their team.

Tensions ran high.  The crowd were silent.  The anticipation could be felt, pulsating in the air…

Miss Lenney (not milking the crowd at all!) announced the places in the traditional reverse order…

Finally, the hall exploded as Durham were announced as champions!  Durham’s house captain came to congratulate his team and fellow house captain before the trophy was proudly pinned to their house board.

A massive thank you to all of the children for taking part, and to Miss Lenney for organising the event.

Stay tuned for the next competition in the new year, who will win that one..?

Shine ‘Wear it Yellow Day’

21st October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

nocwoucnown ofjdkngoejnso nevvuiniuToday the children of Bede Burn took partin our second SHINE ‘Wear it Yellow’ day to raise funds for the charity SHINE.  Grace, in year two, has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus which the charity raises money to aid research and treatments.  As this week is the national awareness week for the two conditions we asked the children to wear something bright yellow (being the charity’s colour) and bring a small donation for the privilege of not wearing their uniform.

A massive thank you to all of the children and their families who supported this cause and helped Bede Burn to raise £242 today!  An excellent effort!

Check out the pictures of the children working and playing in bright yellow…

Down on the farm

28th April 2014Mr M Hamilton

The children in Reception had a great day with their Year 6 buddies helping the farmer to feed the baby lambs, brush the donkeys and wash the pigs.

Thank you to all our parent volunteers, without you the day would not have been possible.

Easter Egg Competition

28th April 2014Mr M Hamilton

The last week of Spring term may not have brought ‘spring like’ weather, but there were happy faces all around as Bede Burn held the fourth ‘house competition’ of the year.  Building on the knowledge that our parents can become very competitive (see October’s pumpkin contest!) we knew that the standard would be very high and we were not disappointed!  There were four ‘winners’ in each class and the judging was easily most difficult decision I’ve had to make this year!

From Angry Birds to farm animals, Storm Troopers to ‘egg pods’ the plethora of egg based puns was second to none!

In the end Aydon house emerged triumphant.

A huge amount of thanks to all of the parents, carers, Grans Grandads and other adults who put in so much time and effort creating the eggcellent creations.

Thurston Visit

28th April 2014Mr M Hamilton

Recently most of our Year 6 children returned from their residential trip to Thurston. Nestled in the foothills around Coniston Waters, the setting was idyllic and ideal for a wide range of outdoor pursuits. From caving to canoeing, ghyl-scrambling to mountaineering, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the activities.  The children had fantastic ‘can do’ attitudes, throwing themselves (sometimes literally) into whatever they’d been challenged with.  Laughter resounded around ‘The Barn’ in the evenings as everyone unwound after each busy day. The behaviour was exemplary; the smiles constant.  Parents might also be interested to know that all of the children made their own beds everyday!   Everyone who went learned a lot and gained memories that will last a lifetime.
