Reading Time

22nd October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Today Mrs Todd hosted Bede Burn’s very first ‘Sibling Story Time’ session.  Any children who have pre school brothers or sisters invited them in for a delightful story session.  Mrs Todd entertained the younger children (and the grown ups) with two stories and a selection of songs.

This event was a brilliant way to share our school’s love of reading with the youngest members of our community and everyone involved agreed that it was a lovely idea.

Well done Mrs Todd!

Science and Mathematics, Outside in the cold!

22nd October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Year three have been using their mathematical skills; measuring and using compass directions to help them with their science topic.  Using meter rulers, chalk and the sunlight, they braved the icy winds and combined some very accurate mathematics with some equally interesting hypothesis to investigate how the shadows change as the earth rotates.

They fly through the air with the greatest of ease…

22nd October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Year three have been busy this week, in their PE sessions they have been learning all about cheer leading!  Their coach, Kimberly, has shown them how the sport combines dance, gymnastics and even a bit of acrobatics!  Miss Lenney has been quite shocked to see some of her children ‘flying’ as they are lifted and supported by the rest of the class!

It has been an excellent way to, not only hone their athletic skills, but to also learn to trust each other and work as part of a team with the same end goal.  Brilliant effort year three!IMG_0497 IMG_0498 IMG_0499 IMG_0490 IMG_0492 IMG_0493 IMG_0494 IMG_0495 IMG_0496

Toys, Toys and more Toys!

22nd October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Year 2’s topic this half term has been all about Toys. We have enjoyed exploring old and new toys and looking at the similarities and differences. We used The Tiger who came to Tea to create our very own stories, which we named The Toy Who Came to Tea. We also planned and created an information page about our own favourite toy. We had great fun sharing them with Year 5!

Year 5 also had great fun acting out scenes from King Arthur. We felt like we were in a theatre! Well done Year 5.

Shine ‘Wear it Yellow Day’

21st October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

nocwoucnown ofjdkngoejnso nevvuiniuToday the children of Bede Burn took partin our second SHINE ‘Wear it Yellow’ day to raise funds for the charity SHINE.  Grace, in year two, has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus which the charity raises money to aid research and treatments.  As this week is the national awareness week for the two conditions we asked the children to wear something bright yellow (being the charity’s colour) and bring a small donation for the privilege of not wearing their uniform.

A massive thank you to all of the children and their families who supported this cause and helped Bede Burn to raise £242 today!  An excellent effort!

Check out the pictures of the children working and playing in bright yellow…

Year Six Love Poetry

21st October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

As part of their English curriculum, year six have been studying some classic poetry.  Beginning with Robert Burns and culminating with Shakespeare, the class surprised themselves at how much they enjoyed reading, performing and analysing the poems.  Finally the class used Shakespeare’s famous Sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day…) as an inspiration for their own sonnets.  You may even find that some are written in iambic pentameter!

Reading in Strange Places…

9th October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

To promote our campaign of reading whenever you get the chance, year three have taken this to the extreme, showing that you really can read where ever you are! I found the children in all sorts of strange places around the school with their noses buried in their books. Check out the gallery here.

If the rest of the school wants to get involved, why not see who can have their photograph taken reading a book in the most extreme or unusual place?  Use the school info contact to send in any pictures and we will add them to the gallery!

House Pumpkin Carving Contest

7th October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

I was delighted and amazed at the creativity and talent shown in last year’s pumpkin carving competition.  It is definitely my favourite house contest of the year!

The rules are fairly simple:

  • This contest is designed for children to work with an adult (knives are sharp!) AT HOME to carve a pumpkin.
  • Pumpkins are then brought into school on Thursday 23rd October and will be displayed in the classrooms.
  • The pumpkins will be judged by Mr Arthur and a ‘guest judge’.
  • The winner in each class earns 5 house points for their house, 3 points for second place and 1 point for third.
  • The house with the most house points across the school will win the coveted house trophy.
  • Prizes will be awarded on Friday 24th October in assembly.
  • Pumpkins MUST be collected on Friday and taken home!

Good luck everyone and I look forward to seeing the entries!

School is…

7th October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Last week parents from year three and four were invited into school to meet Miss Lenney and Miss Summers and see what their children were learning about.  As part of the day the parents and children worked together to produce a poem detailing what they felt ‘school is…’

A copy of the poem is posted below!
