I am loving all of the treasure maps the children are making at home. Thank you to the parents who are spending time burning the maps to make them look old, they look great!
Huge congratulations to our Year 6 children who, this morning, completed their end of KS2 SATs.
We have worked hard all year and the children certainly reaped the benefits of their diligence. I am proud of every single one of Y6 -they all approached this challenging week with courage, determination and a ‘can-do’attitude. Whatever the results, I know that they could not have worked harder. Well done, Y6!

We worked together and helped Mrs Franchi follow instructions to make Hardtack biscuits. Hardtack biscuits are a simple biscuit that pirates ate in the past. This also helped with our measuring knowledge and we recapped that when we measure capacity we measure in millilitres and litres, and if we are measuring weight we measure in grams and kilograms. We will be writing our very own instructions to make Hard Tack biscuits for other pirates to use. If you would like to try a Hard Tack biscuit feel free to pop into Year 2 and use our instructions. 🙂
We had great fun turning into pirates and finding out new pirate facts! We even got to wear our own pirate hats!!
We also followed instructions to dance a pirate prance!
What a fantastic season! Really well done to all of the players this year, you have all been amazing. We have had some impressive wins along the way to winning the title and I am so proud of you all. As promised, everyone got game time and played really well!
you can see the full league table here.
Thanks to all the parents who took the boys to each match and to Mr Robertson who took over the coaching at the end of the season!
Watch this space for news of the ‘Champions league’ and cup fixtures.
Thank you all.
Mr Arthur
Year 5 have had great fun creating their own creation stories in the style of Tinga Tinga Tales, on CBeebies! We used ‘Book Creator’ on the iPads to create digital stories, which can be read by following the links below. Our target audience was Year 1. We read our tales to our reading buddies and the feedback was fantastic! Well done, Year 5.

Year 2 had great fun spending our earnings from the Christmas Fayre. We travelled to Vue Cinema in Gateshead on the metro and took our pack lunches with us. We had a mini adventure, but the fun didn’t stop there as they produced some fantastic writing when asked to write a recount of our trip.
Mrs Kiely loved the VIP seats!
Year 6 Summer Term
Hello parents and children. Welcome back after the Easter holidays to the children’s last term at Bede Burn!
This will be a term of two halves … currently we are working towards the end of KS2 SAT’s so the next few weeks will be spent revising mathematical concepts and spelling and grammar rules. We will also be continuing to practice and hone reading skills – retrieval, inference, deduction, prediction and giving the meaning of words in context. Showcasing the excellent writing skills of all children will also take up a part of this half term starting with a retell of the chilling doll story, ‘Alma’!
After the SAT week (week beginning Monday 9th May – more information to follow), Y6 will continue to perfect their writing and science will become a little more of a focus – Light and Electricity – and topic – Brazil and the Olympics.
Y6 will benefit from a number of specialist coaches this term. We have already began our samba drumming tuition and next half term the children will be receiving Gaelic football coaching culminating in a tournament against our cluster schools.
There will be lots more fun activities to keep year 6 busy for the rest of the term – soon we will begin rehearsals for our end of year performance. All children will take part in this theatrical extravaganza from acting and singing as part of the chorus to back stage roles i.e. lighting, prop making etc.
We shall also be undertaking some enterprise activities to turn the money we raised in the Autumn Term through our ‘Name The Bear’ competition into more money to fund some exciting end of term products.
Another part of our summer term shall be to accompany the Y6 buddies in Reception on some trips – ‘Down At The Farm’ at Houghton-le-Spring and the beach to name two.
As you can see, our Summer Term is packed with fun, exciting activities designed to challenge the children until they prepare to leave us at the end of July. I hope it is a final term to remember for all of the right reasons.
Thank you for your continued support as ever. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to catch me at the year 6 door from 8.30 every morning and at the end of the day,
Mrs M Todd
Hello and welcome back! I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter break. Our new topic this term is pirates and the children are all very excited to get started and learn lots of interesting facts.
We will be linking English to our topic this term and will start by thinking about instructions. The children will be learning to listen to and follow instructions, firstly by playing captain’s coming then making a pirate hat. We will also be making hard tack biscuits (pirate food) and writing our own instructions for other pirates to make them. Pirates is a great topic and can have lots of engaging writing links. (please see topic overview for further information)
Reading and spelling are also still very important and we will be continuing with our weekly spellings focusing on the different spelling rules. Please ensure your child’s reading books and diary are in on their reading day so we can ensure your child is listened to frequently.
In maths we are focusing on number, place value , addition and subtraction, then moving onto recapping multiplication, division and fractions. We will also be focusing on measure, applying skills and knowledge we have learnt throughout the year and using them in different situations.
We are all very excited for our first summer trip tomorrow to the Vue Cinema, Gateshead to see Zootropolis! We are using our earnings from the Christmas stall to pay for most of the trip.
For information on all subjects covered this term please see pirates topic overview.
Thank you!
Mrs Franchi
Year 2 are thinking about instructions in English. We played a game called Captain’s coming and we had to listen and follow instructions. We then gave our partner instructions thinking about verbs and adverbs. They were all really good at spotting the verbs and adverbs!
For our topic lesson we started off thinking about pirates and created a mind map of facts we already know. We even thought about what we would like to find out throughout the topic. We are SUPER excited to find out more about pirates!
