Architecture Afternoon

24th January 2020B Beadling

On Wednesday 13th January, our whole school took part in an ‘architecture afternoon’. Children from Reception to Year 6 were able to experience the exciting world of architecture through a range of different activities.

The afternoon composed of two parts: a lesson centred around a famous architect and a building task.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, the children learnt about Antoni Gaudi, a man famous for his intricate, one-of-a-kind style and ‘trencadis’ style of mosaic tiling. In Lower Key Stage 2, children learnt about Sir Christopher Wren, known for designing St Paul’s Cathedral in his classic English Baroque style. Upper Key Stage 2 were given a more contemporary architect, looking at the work of Zaha Hadid AKA ‘Queen of the curve’. Each class used their given architect as inspiration for their own unique artwork.

The second part of the afternoon was a building challenge. Children experienced how maths and science both play a part when designing and creating buildings and formations. Children were given a series of building challenges and very basic materials to complete them with (thank you for the newspaper donations!). They aimed to use architects’ techniques to create strong structures.

The aim of the day was to display how many professions require expertise in a vast array of areas. Children were able to experience how knowledge of art, science and maths are all fundamental to an architect. Children were able to learn about key figures in the world of architecture, as well as discuss how they reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

It was an amazing experience for all ages, as you can see in the pictures below!

Year 1 prepare for a ‘roarsome’ Spring term!

8th January 2020B Beadling

Hello and Happy New Year!

We hope you had a fantastic holidays, it was wonderful to see Year 1 so excited to be back to school!

What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary?
A Thesaurus.

Spring term will be a busy but exciting term. We have started our new topic, ‘Dinosaur Planet’, which will see Year 1 time-travel back to the Mesozoic Era to find out about some magnificent but fearsome creatures: dinosaurs! We will all become expert paleontologists, digging deep to discover dazzling dinosaur facts. Our new topic will see us pay a visit to the Great North Museum later this term – more information to follow!

As well as ‘Dinosaur Planet’, we will spend the end of Spring term doing a short, geography-based topic all to do with London. Although we have no trips to London planned, we may see if Her Majesty is free to pay us a visit…

Some other important information for the upcoming term:
– Please ensure reading books are read at home and reading diaries are filled in, as well as sending reading books into school every day
– Our PE sessions will be alternate Tuesday afternoons and every Friday afternoon (this session will be with a cricket coach). Can you please make sure PE kits are in school for these days
– Can you please make sure your child does not bring toys into school. We understand how precious they can be and would hate to see them broken!

As always, we can’t wait for yet another brilliant term with the little people!

Welcome to Year 1!

5th September 2019B Beadling

e

Welcome to a new academic year and an exciting year in Year 1! We have already been incredibly busy (see images for ‘body bingo’, which we played during our science lesson!)

Here are a few bits of information for the coming term:
– PE days are Monday & Tuesday, please ensure kits are in school
– Homework will be posted on Seesaw on a Wednesday and will be due the following Monday
– Our topic this term is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ so keep an eye out on Seesaw for pictures of what we’ll be getting up to!

We are two days into term and I’m already incredibly impressed with how the children have risen to the challenge of Year 1. It can be quite different from Reception but they have taken it all in their stride – I’m excited for what the rest of the year has in store!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to message me on Weduc or talk to me on the yard.

Year 6 travel back to World War 2

3rd October 2018B Beadling

As part of our topic, ‘A Child’s War’, Year 6 were asked to come to school dressed as evacuees. As well as donning some fantastic fancy dress, the children also brought in a shoebox of treasured possessions and WW2-era snacks, which helped them to imagine what it felt like to really be evacuated.

Over the course of the day, children created gas masks, used rations to make apple crumble, cross-stitched and made mats. The whole day was soundtracked by a CD of wonderful WW2 songs, kindly provided by Daniel.

Our evacuee day was a fantastic memorable experience to kickstart our new topic, I look forward to seeing what else we get up to.

School Council deliver ‘Christmas in a Box’ to Crusade Walk

By B Beadling16th March 2018

It’s the season of goodwill and what better way to celebrate than to spread some Christmas joy to those in need.

Our school council teamed up with Jackie from St Peter’s Church to prepare and deliver Christmas hampers to elderly members of the community. This, alongside a few Christmas carols, made for a great afternoon.

It’s easy for this time of year to become centred around receiving things. Today demonstrated how fantastic it is to give something back. I’m incredibly proud of the school council children for dedicating their time to such a worthy cause. Can I also thank you all for your extremely kind contributions towards the hampers, you have all made a huge difference.

A Viking Trader Visits Year 4!

16th March 2018B Beadling

As part of our new Cornerstones topic, ‘Traders & Raiders,’

we were fortunate enough to have a special visitor for our memorable experience – Sif the Viking trader!

Sif was a real beacon of knowledge for all things Viking and Anglo-Saxon. She dressed us up in the finest fashion garments – including some rather unsightly underwear! We also got to have a go at milling our own flour, all while learning about what the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons loved to eat the most.

The highlight of our memorable experience was definitely learning about how the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons liked to fight. We were introduced to some of the best weapons they had to offer, Sif even allowed us to carefully handle them.

A fantastic day was topped off with the retelling of a Viking saga, which gave us all goosebumps. A huge thank you to Tanya from ‘Women from the Past’ for such a great day.

Year 4 does Bede-fest

By B Beadling15th September 2017

Year 4 have started to learn about our new topic, Playlists. Our new Cornerstones curriculum encourages fun and exciting topic learning and each topic starts with a memorable experience. As our learning will be centred around music of the 20th Century, what better way to kick things off than with our very own school music festival!

After we arrived dressed as our favourite musicians, we began our day with a jamming session with Mr Mac, who kindly brought in an array of instruments for the children to have a go at playing. Throughout the day we enjoyed a song lyric quiz, crossword treasure hunt and a good old game of musical chairs (with a 20th Century playlist to match!)

The headliners of the festival were the fantastic Little Moth, who came to our school hall to give us a live performance. Jen and Tony played us a mix of old and new music with a bit of music history along the way – what a treat! The children really enjoyed their astounding performance (as did myself and Mr Mac).

Year 4 learnt about the music their grown-ups have grown up with and I learnt a few new dance moves along the way. It’s certainly not a day we will forget.

Watch out Glastonbury!
