Year 6 welcomes out Chinese Visitors

By Mr G Mcintosh13th June 2017

Today, Year 6 spent the whole day entertaining our friends from Meiuyan School in China. Nineteen of the students aged between 8 and 11 are visiting us for the week and we were looking forward to our day with them.

We had a great day and made some new friends. We started the day with some short maths activities where all children were challenged to find all possible 16 quadrilaterals that could possibly be made on a 3 x 3 grid. Then they had to calculate cubed numbers from 10 cubed to 20 cubed and place these numbers in a number crossword.

The day continued with a lesson on Chinese writing and then we went on to draw self portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. However, by far the most fun part of the day was our PE games in the hall. Our visitors enjoyed playing the hoop game, lumps, pirates and colour run.

Their teacher said they had all thoroughly enjoyed the day and I was extremely proud of all of Y6 who welcomed all of our visitors with open arms. Loud goodbyes rang out on both sides of the hall at 3.15 and I know the children are looking forward to seeing more of their new friends before they leave us on Tuesday.

Give and Gain Day

By Mr G Mcintosh30th May 2017

We were lucky enough to take part in ‘Give and Gain Day’, organised by Mike from the charity ‘Business in the Community’. Mike organised volunteers from a number of local businesses to come down to school and help us to improve. This included joining in with assembly, reading with children, being interviewed by children for a newspaper article and also giving some of our furniture a lick of paint! The rain did it’s best to dampen the volunteers’ spirits, but they carried on regardless and managed to brighten up our parents’ shelter, friendship bench and picnic benches in the peace garden.

Our children loved having the volunteers in school, and asked them some great questions. We thanked them all for giving up their time to help Bede Burn, and I’d like to repeat that sentiment here – thank you very much to Mike, Business in the Community and all of the volunteers.

ZooLab

By J Evans30th May 2017

Reception were one of the classes lucky enough to meet Rob and some of his amazing ‘pets’ as a reward for all their amazing work and research linked to our topic on mini beasts. Shelley, the giant African land snail was certainly bigger than the little visitors we had in our classroom a few weeks ago and his giant cockroach didn’t seem to faze the children at all. Talula, the tarantula was a particular favourite and we had great fun trying to count the giant millipede’s legs. We also met a rather beautiful milk snake.

Can I saw how super proud I was of the children, not only for their enthusiasm and for how much they had remembered from our work in class and at Forest School but also for their impeccable manners and behaviour throughout the session which also impressed our visitor.

Easter Egg Winners!

By Mr G Mcintosh6th April 2017

We had an egg-celent assembly yesterday – and I’m not yolking… As always, the children of Bede Burn went above and beyond with their Easter Egg creations. The only tricky bit was choosing only three winners per class! The lucky winners’ creations can be seen below and also in the ‘galleries’ section. They won some Easter chocolate and, crucially, points for their house!

Well done one and all.

Sing Up Day

By Mr G Mcintosh30th March 2017

On Wednesday 22nd March, it was international Sing Up day. Schools across the globe celebrated by singing this year’s Sing Up anthem, ‘Let Love Shine Through’. We went one step further and had a singing afternoon!

We started off with a sing-song in the hall, singing some of our favourite songs. Some required pupils from different classes to sing different parts, all coming together in beautiful harmony, which the children coped tremendously well with.

We then sang this year’s anthem, which is all about the importance of understanding that everyone is different, and that is a good thing as it brings a rich diversity and eclectic mix to life. We filmed our singing efforts and sent it off to the Sing Up staff. Last year’s Bede Burn video was used as part of this year’s music video, sent to all schools using Sing Up, so we have high hopes that we will reach the same dizzy heights this year!

After that, the children moved around the school in classes, singing a song with each teacher all the way from Reception up to Year 6, before finally coming back together to surprise our parents and grandparents with a ‘flash mob’ at home time.

We really value opportunities like this when subjects such as music get a spotlight placed upon them, and children have a chance to develop and display their talents. Singing as part of a large group has also been shown to raise self-esteem in children and promote a happy atmosphere. There is something very inclusive and comforting in being one of over 200 voices, all working together to make a beautiful sound. And, of course, it was jolly good fun too…

Check out our gallery of super singers. Look out for the pictures of our staff, all mid-song!
