South Tyneside Magic Week

17th March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

This post seemed to vanish from the website last week!

Bedeburn Primary school played host to ‘Magic Andrew’ as well as many members of the local press, during South Tyneside’s annual Magic Week!

Andrew entertained the whole school in the morning, and afterwards two of our children were interviewed for BBC radio Newcastle!

You can hear their interview here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02kq022#auto – it starts at 51 mins and 48 seconds in.

They also ran something slightly different in the afternoon show http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02kq02h – it starts at 25 mins and 44 secs in.

Red Nose Day 2015

13th March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

A massive thank you to all of the children and their families today who helped us raise £394 for Comic Relief!

The children all looked great wearing bright red, and what more fitting day than to launch our new school PE kit, which is now bright red!

Check out the red costumes and face paints here!

World Book Day

6th March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

Thursday saw Wally, Gangsta Granny, Horrid Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and many more of our favourite book characters turn up for school!  Of course, world book day was with us again.

The children all looked fantastic, huge thanks to all of the parents, grandparents and carers who worked so hard on the costumes to make their children look so amazing!

Mrs Todd also organised a ‘bring and buy book sale’ which meant that most children went home clutching a new book, and we raised £153 to help replenish our school library stock.  Again, thank you for your kind donations.

We have lots of photographs to share, and once they are collated from all of the cameras you will be able to see them here!

Performance Poetry

3rd March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

I was delighted today as four year three children descended on my office to entertain me with a performance of the poem below!

As it turns out, all Miss Lenney had given them was the poem, the girls decided themselves how to pronounce each line and practised hard to stay in time.  I’m sure that you will agree they have done a marvellous job!

Read for My School

23rd January 2015Mr G Mcintosh

As you may be aware, we have signed up every child in key stage two for this initiative.  There are around 150 million free books on line from some of the most famous and popular children’s authors, all available to read on line or to download!  Each child will have their own log in which will allow them to access the books.  The website monitors how much and how frequently the children read, and there are puzzles and quizzes to test their understanding of what they have read.  There are prizes available nationally but as a school we have decided to provide some very desirable and high quality prizes for the children that make a great effort to read regularly through this site.

Don’t worry if your child does not have access to the Internet at home.  Each class will be timetabled some time each week to access the site and read using the iPads in school.

For more information, and to access the books please visit http://www.readformyschool.co.uk

Spring has sprung in Year 6!

8th January 2015Mr G Mcintosh

A new year, a new topic…we’re raring to go. This term we are studying China. Our children thoroughly enjoyed spending time with our Chinese visitors in December and they are very motivated to find out more about the country that our ‘sister-school’ pupils live in. We will learn all about the geography of China, the people, the culture, and the rich history of the country, comparing each of these aspects to those of our own country. This will be a fascinating look at the lives of others and will expand the children’s knowledge of the world around them! As always, our topic work will be cross-curricular, including interesting and relevant art, design, music and ICT links as well as developing history, geography and English skills. Our class are being encouraged to enhance their learning at home by playing games played in China, such as Mahjong, Jacks and Chess. Some other games can be found here: http://www.primarygames.com/holidays/chinese/games.htm  It also sounds like an excellent excuse to try a selection of delicious Chinese dishes! During half-term, Chinese New Year celebrations will be held in Stowell Street, including dancing and fireworks… and it’s free!

Other interesting events planned for this term include samba drumming tuition and trips to both Nissan and the Tyneside Cinema. It promises to be a fantastic term!

Year Four Spring Term

7th January 2015Mr G Mcintosh

This term Year 4 will be learning about the Stone Age; creating cave paintings, models of Stonehenge and prehistoric homes. Looking at scientific theory, we will be trying to understand how long ago first humans lived and how their daily life might have compared to ours. We will consider recording dates in AD and BC, linking this to our RE work on what Christians believe about Jesus.

Lots of our Literacy work will be linked to reading well known books; we will continue to read David Walliams’ “Awful Auntie” as our class novel, whilst using “Fantastic Mr Fox” and “Stig of the Dump” to help improve our writing skills. Maths will build on our previous work of learning new formal written methods for calculations, supported by our quick times tables recall. This is our last term for swimming and we will also be exploring movement & dance, when we can’t enjoy our new outside gym equipment.

Welcome Back

7th January 2015Mr G Mcintosh

Happy New Year and welcome back!

Wow what a fantastic and busy term we had! I hope you are ready for another one!

Our topic this term is the magnificent Walt Disney. Throughout this topic the children will be exploring the history of Walt Disney and finding out how and when the magic began.

Our literacy work this term will focus on our story writing skills, giving the children a variety of different challenges, from creating character profiles to developing their role-play skills. We will continue to focus on our phonic work to improve both our reading and our writing. Phonics Play www.phonicsplay.co.uk is a great website which has some free games and activities which you may find useful!

In maths we will continue to develop our understanding of number and shape, space and measures, any help you could give the children on number bonds to 10 would be great. I would also really appreciate any help and support you could give to the children in their understanding of money and time.

Thank you!

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays.

Our literacy work this term will focus on the exciting world of traditional tales, giving the children the challenge of creating their own traditional tale. We will also complete some work on character profiles, using lots of adjectives and connectives. We will continue to focus on our phonics and spelling to improve both our reading and our writing. Phonics Play is a great website which has free games and activities you may find useful. www.phonicsplay.co.uk.

In maths we will continue to develop our understanding of number, any help you can give your child on number bonds to 20 would be great. I would also really appreciate any help and support you could give to your child in their understanding of money, time and multiplication (x2,x5 and x10).

Thank you!

Chinese Visit December 2014

9th December 2014Mr G Mcintosh

As you know, we have been lucky enough to welcome children and teachers from Meiyuan School in Futian, Shenzhen in China to Bede Burn this week.

They arrived on Thursday afternoon and have so far visited Newcastle city centre (to see a pantomime), York and Edinburgh.  Monday was their first day in our school and they had all sorts of fun working with our children in key stage one.  The Chinese children were fascinated by our colourful displays, that children’s work was on the walls and how small our school is (they have 1,600 children in the school and 50 in each class!)  Perhaps the most surprising discovery was that the children were delighted to find that we had “real grass” on our field as their grounds are all artificial.

We have more fun activities planned in school and afterwards that will allow our children to learn more about the Chinese culture.  If you are attending the key stage two show on Tuesday then you will witness the signing of our ‘sister school agreement’ which we hope will allow us to forge even firmer links with our new friends in the East.
