Y6 : Ice-Skating at Centre For Life

Last Wednesday, Year 6 travelled by Metro up to the Centre for Life for an exciting start to their new topic: Frozen Kingdom. After getting ice-skates on and a brief introductory ice-skating lesson, Y6 plus Mrs Todd, Mrs Arthur and Mrs O’Neill took to the ice. It was a shaky start for many who clung on to the barrier for dear life however, everyone who found it tricky persevered and by the end everyone was skating around the rink independently.

To the relief of all of the staff, all children got off the rink without injury and many children declared it ‘the best trip ever’. Aron even asked if, instead of going bowling after the SATs in Spring, we could do ice-skating again.

A tour of the Centre for Life followed including: a ride on the 4D Polar Express themed motion ride; a trip through space in the planetarium; a science show and time to investigate the brain and discovery zones.

A brilliant trip was had by all and behaviour was as impeccable as ever!

Victorian Slums project

Year 6 have been learning about Victorian slums as part of their ILP. All of the children did a fabulous job. Mrs Todd and I were so impressed by one in particular that we asked the creator to write a blog about it (below). Keep up the great work!

‘In class, we were asked to create a slum house which was based on the 19th century Victorian slums.  I have designed an alleyway which has three buildings made into five small living areas.  To create these tiny homes I have used: cardboard, boxes, tubes, string, matchsticks, material, tea bags and weeds.  People lived in dirty, crowded conditions and many shared beds.  Times were very hard; people had very little money and poor hygiene. I have created a washing line for each slum to share, with clothes and bedding on.  The pathways are all dirty.  Everything I have used has been recycled, including used tea bags, which I have steeped material in to give a used and filthy look!’

Spring term in Year 6

Welcome back to school in a brand new year – 2017! Thank you very much for all presents and cards that I received from the children for Christmas and I hope you all had a fun and restful Christmas.
The Spring term looks like it is going to be very busy. We are going to be working towards the ever-looming SATs that will take place in May. This term will require a lot of hard work and dedication from all children and I am sure that they will work to the best of their ability and reap the rewards.
In English, our studies will be focused on the book ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz about the adventures of Alex Rider who is recruited to join MI6 while only a teenager. Through our study of this text we will explore a whole text through reading activities, drama activities and the children will be showing off their writing talents in many genres e.g. diary entries, explanation and persuasion. In maths, the first half of this term will be focused on decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion and measurement. We will continue to hold booster sessions on Thursday mornings starting from 8am.
Our topic this half term is ‘Marvellous Maps’ a geography based unit which allows children to explore the range of maps available to geographers and to develop their understanding of the key features of maps. They will study a range of maps and atlases, including digital maps, and compare their features. The will learn to use the eight compass points to give directions and give grid references to locate places on a map. By comparing maps of the same place, children will learn about the way that places have changed over time. We will link our work in ‘Stormbreaker’ to this topic and use maps – both paper-based and online – to locate and find out more about key settings from the novel which is set in many locations throughout London and Cornwall. World maps will be used to locate the settings of future Alex Rider missions that take place all over Europe and the wider world.
In ICT we will be continue to practise coding through Discovery Coding.
This term PE will take place on Thursday afternoons but it would be a good idea for the children to have a kit in school at all times as we will sometimes be adding in some extra sessions if we need to ‘blow off steam’ after working so hard in the lead up to the SATs.

Tag Rugby Champions

Yesterday teams from years five and six took part in the annual tag rugby tournament at Hebburn.

We took three teams from each year group and every team played brilliantly, in fact the only time one of our teams lost a match was against one of our other teams!

The final was decided between Year six A and Year five A.  A game of highly skilled play and amazing teamwork saw the year six team finish victorious with a score of 3 tries to 1.  However, the match was much closer than the score suggests with the final try being scored by year six in the dying minutes as the year five team pressed for an equaliser.

The staff were hugely proud of all of our children’s dedication, fair play and exemplary behaviour.

Girl’s Football!

Tonight, the girls from years five and six played their very first competitive games in the Bede Burn blue kit!  Simonside and St Oswalds Hebburn brought teams along and all of the girls played really well.

Although the main aim was for the girls to get a chance to represent their schools and have fun, there had to be a winnng team…

Of course it was Bede Burn!  The team won the first game 3 – 0 and the second 4 – 0!  Everyone played brilliantly and all the matches were played in a superb spirit!

Really well done girls and thank you to all the family and friends that came along to support them!

 

Year 6 Leaver’s Hoodies

Y6 received their leaver’s hoodies yesterday. You can tell from their faces how much they love them.

The class are currently raising money for these as part of an enterprise project. Thank you to all who bought tea or coffee at the Queen’s Birthday Party or who bought a number in our hundred club. This raised a lot of money towards the hoodies.

Texts will be going out soon to the winners of the 100 club.

Y6 will be selling ice pops for 20p and other refreshments at sports day so look out for our stall!

Y6 SATs

Huge congratulations to our Year 6 children who, this morning, completed their end of KS2 SATs.

We have worked hard all year and the children certainly reaped the benefits of their diligence. I am proud of every single one of Y6 -they all approached this challenging week with courage, determination and a ‘can-do’attitude. Whatever the results, I know that they could not have worked harder. Well done, Y6!

Y6 – Summer Term

Year 6 Summer Term

Hello parents and children. Welcome back after the Easter holidays to the children’s last term at Bede Burn!

This will be a term of two halves … currently we are working towards the end of KS2 SAT’s so the next few weeks will be spent revising mathematical concepts and spelling and grammar rules. We will also be continuing to practice and hone reading skills – retrieval, inference, deduction, prediction and giving the meaning of words in context. Showcasing the excellent writing skills of all children will also take up a part of this half term starting with a retell of the chilling doll story, ‘Alma’!

After the SAT week (week beginning Monday 9th May – more information to follow), Y6 will continue to perfect their writing and science will become a little more of a focus – Light and Electricity – and topic – Brazil and the Olympics.

Y6 will benefit from a number of specialist coaches this term. We have already began our samba drumming tuition and next half term the children will be receiving Gaelic football coaching culminating in a tournament against our cluster schools.

There will be lots more fun activities to keep year 6 busy for the rest of the term – soon we will begin rehearsals for our end of year performance. All children will take part in this theatrical extravaganza from acting and singing as part of the chorus to back stage roles i.e. lighting, prop making etc.

We shall also be undertaking some enterprise activities to turn the money we raised in the Autumn Term through our ‘Name The Bear’ competition into more money to fund some exciting end of term products.

Another part of our summer term shall be to accompany the Y6 buddies in Reception on some trips – ‘Down At The Farm’ at Houghton-le-Spring and the beach to name two.

As you can see, our Summer Term is packed with fun, exciting activities designed to challenge the children until they prepare to leave us at the end of July. I hope it is a final term to remember for all of the right reasons.
