Y6 – Lockdown – Transition Webinar for Parents

24th April 2020Helen Smith
This is a webinar for Year 6 parents who are worried about their child going to secondary school.
It is to try and reassure you about your child leaving primary after missing so much school and any common pitfalls about starting secondary.
It is on 1st May but you need to register to be able to see it.
Thanks so much to Mrs Riley for sharing this!

Year 6

4th September 2019Mr G Mcintosh

Welcome to a new school year and welcome to Year 6!

It was lovely to see the children back at school today looking fresh and ready to learn for this important year at Bede Burn.

Children are welcome to enter the Year 6 classroom through the classroom door on a morning and if you need to speak to me, please feel free to catch me on the door at drop off time.

Our timetable this half term has a few extras including Forest School that will take place on Wednesday mornings. As usual, children should come to school dressed in old warm, waterproof clothes with suitable footwear. An extra pair of shoes to change into for indoor use would be appreciated!

PE this term will take place on Thursdays and alternate Fridays; it is probably best to leave the PE kit in school for the whole half term or to bring it in on Monday mornings and take home on Friday afternoons if you’d prefer to wash it more often. The Thursday PE slot will be taken by an external hockey coach.

As last year, homework will be given out on a Wednesday on Seesaw and will be expected to be completed by the following Monday morning. Preferably, homework should be recorded on or uploaded to Seesaw unless other instructions are given. Children will have reading and spelling and an English or maths activity every week. It is essential that homework is completed – if you have any problems either technical or with the work content, please feel free to contact by via the Year 6 door most mornings or send a message via Seesaw.

Project work for the whole of the Autumn term will be based around the topic title ‘Hola Mexico’. It is a fun and exciting topic filled with art, music and DT opportunities as well as history and geography objectives. Children will learn about the history of chocolate alongside the history of the Ancient Maya and will study many aspects of physical and human geography including a study of the Chihuahua desert, climate and holiday destinations. We will also study the famous Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo and make and taste delicious Mexican food from tortillas to tacos complemented by a delicious agua fresca drink made with limes and brown sugar.

This project will complement our novel study in English which is ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar and writing opportunities will include writing in character as the main character, Stanley Yelnats and writing a report on the yellow-spotted lizards. Writing opportunities will also come from ‘Hola Mexico’ and will include a balanced arguement debating both sides of Donald Trump’s decision to build a wall at the border between Mexico and the USA!

I look forward to working with you over the forthcoming year and I am sure it will be a successful one for all children in Year 6.

Mrs Todd

Year 6 travel back to World War 2

3rd October 2018B Beadling

As part of our topic, ‘A Child’s War’, Year 6 were asked to come to school dressed as evacuees. As well as donning some fantastic fancy dress, the children also brought in a shoebox of treasured possessions and WW2-era snacks, which helped them to imagine what it felt like to really be evacuated.

Over the course of the day, children created gas masks, used rations to make apple crumble, cross-stitched and made mats. The whole day was soundtracked by a CD of wonderful WW2 songs, kindly provided by Daniel.

Our evacuee day was a fantastic memorable experience to kickstart our new topic, I look forward to seeing what else we get up to.
