Y4 – Science – Changing states of matter – 26.3.2025

26th March 2025Helen Smith

Year 4 discussed how materials change from one state to another. Today, we experimented with a chocolate button where we placed one onto our hand. After a short while, the chocolate button started to melt into a liquid from the heat of our hand. It changed its state of matter from a solid into a liquid. We enjoyed having the remains!

Y4 – PE – Sports Leaders Event – 19.3.2025

19th March 2025Helen Smith

Year 4 had a great, sporty morning at St Joseph’s for our P.E. Event with the Sport’s Leaders. For the first half of the morning, we participated in a Sportshall Athletics Competition where we enjoyed competing in hurdle races, sprints (using the Sportshall reverser boards), standing long jump, vertical jump, 5 strides, overhead throw and skipping.

The second half of the morning involved us participating in Benchball and Dodgeball competitions which we thoroughly enjoyed. We worked well within our teams where we were developing our agility, balance and coordination whilst having fun! Thank you St Joseph’s Catholic Academy!

Y4 – DT – William Morris and fabrics – 17.3.2025

17th March 2025Helen Smith

After studying William Morris designs in our DT topic,’Functional and Fancy Fabrics’, and looking at various ways of embellishing fabrics, Year Four has been learning how to sew! We have sewed a hem and attached a button and even learnt how to embroider various different types of stitches. It took a lot of patience and concentration but we all managed to complete some fantastic pieces and are excited to do more!

Y4 – Science – Change and Adapt – 17.3.2025

17th March 2025Helen Smith
To celebrate British Science Week – Change and Adapt, Year 4 performed an experiment each day looking at how different mediums can change state, supporting our current Science topic of ‘States of Matter’.
Each day the children PREDICTED what they thought would happen, then put it into PRACTICE and finally ANALYSED the results. We made sure all experiments were FAIR and MEASURED.

Y4 – Science – Environment and Soil Investigation – 14.3.2025

14th March 2025Helen Smith
Year Four used their knowledge from their Geography topic, ‘Misty Mountains, Winding Rivers’ to follow clues through the Forest Garden to complete a scavenger hunt and answer questions about environments and comparing various habitats and living conditions.
We also did a soil investigation, taking samples from different parts of the Forest Garden and adding water to them, to be able to see the different layers of soil and discuss how they differed from the different areas. This showed the importance of soil how it is rich in nutrients to help all areas of life.
