Whole School Aspirations Assembly – PSHE – 10.1.2023

10th January 2023Helen Smith

Mrs Swanson led a whole school assembly this morning really getting us to think and challenge ourselves linked to our vision of Think BIG…Dream BIG.. Go for it and our aspirations for 2023  !! It was a super start to our New Year at Bede Burn.

We thought about our main words linked to our vision for this term which are ‘aspire’ and ‘inspire’.  The children thought about some people who have inpired them such as Neil Armstrong, Christiano Ronaldo and Greta Thunberg.  The children were given a task by Mrs Swanson this week to develop their own aspiration dream jar.  Some of these will be added to our hall display.

Thank you Mrs Swanson for leading such a fab assembly and really challenging us regarding our aspirations for this coming year.

Bede Burn find out all about Diwali – 1.11.2022

1st November 2022Helen Smith

All of Bede Burn were lucky enough to be part of a brilliant assembly this morning delivered by Miss Summers giving us loads of facts about the Hindu Festival of Diwali also known as the festival of light. We learnt about the associated traditions such as cleaning the house prior, making rangoli patterns with candles in to invite the God Lakshmi into the home to bless it.

They also celebrate with fireworks and rows of lights. This is linked to the story of Rama and Sita and them defeating good over evil!

Thanks Miss Summers for such a brilliant start to our day!

World Book Day 2020!

10th March 2020Mrs J Peel

What an amazing day we had at Bede Burn celebrating Wold Book Day 2020. Staff and pupils brought in their favourite books to share and we all dressed up as our favourite story characters or wore pyjamas.

Children shared stories with each other, wrote about their favourite books and characters, listened to stories in classes and houses, sang songs, played World Book Day games and quizzes and had lots of fun.

Thank you to all staff and parents for your support with this brilliant event. It was wonderful to see everyone in school sharing their love of Reading with each other and promoting the benefits of stories at home and school.

Architecture Afternoon

24th January 2020B Beadling

On Wednesday 13th January, our whole school took part in an ‘architecture afternoon’. Children from Reception to Year 6 were able to experience the exciting world of architecture through a range of different activities.

The afternoon composed of two parts: a lesson centred around a famous architect and a building task.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, the children learnt about Antoni Gaudi, a man famous for his intricate, one-of-a-kind style and ‘trencadis’ style of mosaic tiling. In Lower Key Stage 2, children learnt about Sir Christopher Wren, known for designing St Paul’s Cathedral in his classic English Baroque style. Upper Key Stage 2 were given a more contemporary architect, looking at the work of Zaha Hadid AKA ‘Queen of the curve’. Each class used their given architect as inspiration for their own unique artwork.

The second part of the afternoon was a building challenge. Children experienced how maths and science both play a part when designing and creating buildings and formations. Children were given a series of building challenges and very basic materials to complete them with (thank you for the newspaper donations!). They aimed to use architects’ techniques to create strong structures.

The aim of the day was to display how many professions require expertise in a vast array of areas. Children were able to experience how knowledge of art, science and maths are all fundamental to an architect. Children were able to learn about key figures in the world of architecture, as well as discuss how they reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

It was an amazing experience for all ages, as you can see in the pictures below!

Muck, Mess and Mixtures… Year Two’s Messy Day!

24th January 2020Mr M Ferraro

Wow, what a fantastic day we had in Year 2 on Monday! To kick start our topic, Muck, Mess and Mixtures, we had a day of art, DT, science and food as our ‘memorable experience’.

The children had such a good time joining in with all the activities and couldn’t wait to try everything independently.

First, we tied and dyed our t-shirts in buckets of yellow, blue and red. Then, using junk modelling, we created ‘Egg Box Dragons’ based on the story we’ve read in class. After lunch we experimented with mixtures. We tried to mix water and oil, but the liquids kept separating! We also mixed vinegar and baking soda which gave an exciting reaction! Later in the day we tried to make the perfect bubble mixture using water and soap. When the mixture was right, we managed to make huge bubbles! We then tried in groups to make our own bubble blowers and bubble mixture. We ended the day with a tasty mixture… custard!

Luckily, by the next day our tie-dyed t-shirts had dried. We decided to wear them to yoga to make our lesson extra funky.

It was such a great day and we’re looking forward to doing even more!

Show and tell of homework and other relevant pieces of work will be on Fridays too. After school clubs will also be up and running soon, please keep an eye out for notifications through Weduc.

We’ve already enjoyed using a mixture of paint, soap and water to create bubble prints and I can’t wait for all the fun we’ll have this term!

Spring term – Year 4

7th January 2020J Summers

Welcome back, we hope you have had a fabulous festive holiday and we are looking forward to having your wonderful children back in school for a fun-packed term ahead. We hope they are keen to learn, have fun and achieve the best they can.

This half term our topic is Misty Mountain Sierra, where we will discover how these giants are formed as a fold, block, plateau or dome. We will follow the water cycles course from peak to valley and meet the exceptional tribes of the hostile Himalayas. We will plan an expedition, using map reading and orienteering skills where the children will investigate weather changes and habitats. Children will then get to use their creative skills to design and make a mountain range and weave like the Adi people.

Our English will link to our topic and we will explore the work of J. R. R.Tolkien and read The Hobbit, exploring the life of hobbits, wizards, orcs, dwarfs and goblins on their treacherous journey to find a gold ring and save middle earth. We will use this book to develop their writing, spelling and vocabulary and hope they enjoy the adventure.

In maths our focus is measure, where we will be learning how to find the perimeter of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. Please continue to work on times tables at home with your children. The National Multiplication Check for Year 4 will be in June for all pupils.

We ask that you read with your child for 15 minutes each day. Reading is vitally important to mental stimulation, knowledge expansion and helps improve writing skills.
Reading books are to be in school every day so that they can take part in our reading scheme Accelerated Reader.

Points to note:

  • Swimming is Thursday afternoon
  • P.E. is Monday afternoon
  • Reading books and journals must be in school every day
  • Please send water bottles to school for your child (plain, still water)
  • Homework will be sent out on a Wednesday to be returned no later than the following Monday
  • Please use WEDUC for any communication (or catch us on the door on a morning)
  • Miss Summers will continue to work in Year 4 on a Monday and Mrs Peel will be in class Tuesday to Friday.

We are excited about the term ahead and can’t wait to get started!

Welcome to 2020: Year 3

6th January 2020A Lenney

Welcome back to a full and busy Spring term. First of all I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year, I hope that you all had a wonderful time over the holidays and had lots of fun.

This term promises to be lots of fun too. We are beginning a new topic entitled “Gods and Mortals” where we will be discovering the myths and legends of Ancient Greece as well as looking at the geography of the region. We might even explore how we would have acted if we had found Pandora’s Box. Would you have opened it or left it well alone?

I am really looking forward to studying two different books this term, The Tin Forest and The Iron Man. Both are amazing books, but very different, one definitely appeals to the eye with beautiful and meaningful illustrations, while the other is the definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. We will look at how these books surprise and challenge the reader, as well as trying to write in a range of styles.

Maths will continue to challenge us to build on our knowledge daily, we will look at topics which include multiplication and division, money, fractions and measurement. As well as learning new methods and facts, I hope that we will continue to have fun with numbers and explore this exciting subject.

This term also sees Year 3 starting swimming sessions. This will take place after February half term, and more details will be sent out near the time. We will finish the term with our Grandparents’ Concert, which is always a highlight of the year, I wonder what the theme will be this year!

As you can see, this is a very full term, with lots to look forward to.
