Welcome to Year 4!

6th September 2019Mrs J Peel

I can’t believe it’s the start of Autumn term already! I hope you’ve all had a lovely summer with your family and friends and are feeling refreshed and ready to go! We are delighted to be back with all your wonderful children ready to start a brand new term in school. We have lots to look forward to this year and I look forward to seeing the pupils shine and make the progress they are capable of.

Our topic this term is Burps, Bottoms and Bile… so lots of weird and wonderful facts and vocabulary for us to have a giggle about. We will be learning about teeth, the digestive system as well as staying fit and healthy. The children will be visited by a local dentist who will talk to them about the importance of looking after your teeth. We will be carrying out various experiments to show the children exactly what happens when you don’t look after them…Toothbrushes at the ready!

Our English worked will be closely linked to our topic and we will be reading the horror that is Demon Dentist by David Walliams. Year 4 will be focusing on spelling and vocabulary this year to further develop and enhance the children’s writing skills. Can I take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of reading at home with your children. Sharing a book with your child is fun – it’s a time for closeness, laughing and talking together. Reading exposes our children to different styles, voices, genres and vocabulary and as a result helps to improve their independent writing. The children will read with an adult each week and we will look closely at their reading skills using our ever popular Accelerated Reading scheme. This has worked well to improve children’s reading and encouraged those children not as keen to read to pick up a book and have a go.

Maths in Year 4 is more important than ever as we have the statutory multiplication check to do in June 2020. It is important the children practise their tables at home as well as school and we would be grateful for parental support with this. In school we will be using games, songs, quizzes and chants to continue to develop their knowledge. Our focus in maths this term is Number and Place Value, where the pupils will learn Roman Numerals, begin to round numbers and compare and order numbers to 1000.

We will continue to use Seesaw to keep you up to date with what the children are up to in class and around school. If you need any logins or passwords please contact the main office for support.

Points to note,

  • Swimming is a Thursday afternoon
  • P.E is a Friday afternoon
  • Reading books and reading journals must be in school everyday
  • Please send a water bottle to school for your child (plain, still water only)
  • Homework (when set) will be sent out on a Wednesday to be returned no later than the following Monday
  • Please use Weduc for any communication (or catch us on the door on a morning)
  • Miss Summers will be working in Year 4 on a Monday and I will be in Tuesday to Friday.

As always, we will work hard to provide your children with the most stimulating and invigorating curriculum providing them with a safe and nurturing environment to work in. We aim to use a variety of teaching tools and resources to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that makes learning fun and raises standards.

Thank you for your continued support.

Welcome to Year 1!

5th September 2019B Beadling

e

Welcome to a new academic year and an exciting year in Year 1! We have already been incredibly busy (see images for ‘body bingo’, which we played during our science lesson!)

Here are a few bits of information for the coming term:
– PE days are Monday & Tuesday, please ensure kits are in school
– Homework will be posted on Seesaw on a Wednesday and will be due the following Monday
– Our topic this term is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ so keep an eye out on Seesaw for pictures of what we’ll be getting up to!

We are two days into term and I’m already incredibly impressed with how the children have risen to the challenge of Year 1. It can be quite different from Reception but they have taken it all in their stride – I’m excited for what the rest of the year has in store!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to message me on Weduc or talk to me on the yard.

We’re in the Juniors now!

5th September 2019A Lenney

Welcome to Year 3.

I am so excited and thrilled to say hello to our time in Year 3. This is such an exciting time in our learning journey, we will be building on everything we learned in Key Stage 1 and exploring and acquiring new skills as we move forward.

Our journey starts by travelling back in time to The Stone Age, which we will study as part of our project Tribal Tales. We will be exploring cave paintings, amazing creatures and the lives of those people who lived so long ago.

Some important things to note for Year 3

PE Days are Tuesday and Friday. On a Tuesday we will be taking part in a Yoga class for the first half term, also on a Tuesday we will be taking part in Pedestrian Training, so a Tuesday afternoon will be very busy.

Reading Days will be shared with the children by the end of the first week, and I will also be sending more information out about homework this week.

Mr Mac and I have been absolutely thrilled with the way the children have coped with the challenge of Year 3. Indeed lots of people have commented on how sensible and confident the children have been. What an amazing start!

As ever, if you have any questions or concerns, or just want a chat to find out how things are going, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you for your continuing enthusiasm and support.

Miss Lenney and Mr Mac

Welcome back Year Two!

4th September 2019Mr M Ferraro

Hello!

Welcome back for another fantastic year! I can’t wait to get stuck in and enjoy all our new topics! We’ll begin the term with our history topic, Street Detectives, where we’ll get to learn all about our local area. This will involve visiting Monkton village and learning about many of the buildings and streets. We’ll also be doing some activities for remembrance day (more info to follow towards the end of October.

PE will be on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear and the correct PE kit. All our PE for Autumn term will be indoors so trainers are not necessary but plimsolls will be fine.

Homework is posted on Seesaw on Wednesdays and due the following Monday, if there is any issue completing any tasks then please let me know as soon as possible so I can help, After school clubs will also be up and running soon, please keep an eye out for notifications through Weduc.

Our first day has started almost as brightly as the new uniforms, it was great to get some outdoor maths in before the Autumn weather sets in!

Year 6

4th September 2019Mr G Mcintosh

Welcome to a new school year and welcome to Year 6!

It was lovely to see the children back at school today looking fresh and ready to learn for this important year at Bede Burn.

Children are welcome to enter the Year 6 classroom through the classroom door on a morning and if you need to speak to me, please feel free to catch me on the door at drop off time.

Our timetable this half term has a few extras including Forest School that will take place on Wednesday mornings. As usual, children should come to school dressed in old warm, waterproof clothes with suitable footwear. An extra pair of shoes to change into for indoor use would be appreciated!

PE this term will take place on Thursdays and alternate Fridays; it is probably best to leave the PE kit in school for the whole half term or to bring it in on Monday mornings and take home on Friday afternoons if you’d prefer to wash it more often. The Thursday PE slot will be taken by an external hockey coach.

As last year, homework will be given out on a Wednesday on Seesaw and will be expected to be completed by the following Monday morning. Preferably, homework should be recorded on or uploaded to Seesaw unless other instructions are given. Children will have reading and spelling and an English or maths activity every week. It is essential that homework is completed – if you have any problems either technical or with the work content, please feel free to contact by via the Year 6 door most mornings or send a message via Seesaw.

Project work for the whole of the Autumn term will be based around the topic title ‘Hola Mexico’. It is a fun and exciting topic filled with art, music and DT opportunities as well as history and geography objectives. Children will learn about the history of chocolate alongside the history of the Ancient Maya and will study many aspects of physical and human geography including a study of the Chihuahua desert, climate and holiday destinations. We will also study the famous Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo and make and taste delicious Mexican food from tortillas to tacos complemented by a delicious agua fresca drink made with limes and brown sugar.

This project will complement our novel study in English which is ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar and writing opportunities will include writing in character as the main character, Stanley Yelnats and writing a report on the yellow-spotted lizards. Writing opportunities will also come from ‘Hola Mexico’ and will include a balanced arguement debating both sides of Donald Trump’s decision to build a wall at the border between Mexico and the USA!

I look forward to working with you over the forthcoming year and I am sure it will be a successful one for all children in Year 6.

Mrs Todd

Finding germs!

4th June 2019A Lenney

We have been finding out about Louis Pasteur in science, so we decided to carry out an experiment of our own. We had two pieces of bread, we did not handle one piece, but the other piece we all handled. Now we are waiting to see what happens!
