Year 6 travel back to World War 2

3rd October 2018B Beadling

As part of our topic, ‘A Child’s War’, Year 6 were asked to come to school dressed as evacuees. As well as donning some fantastic fancy dress, the children also brought in a shoebox of treasured possessions and WW2-era snacks, which helped them to imagine what it felt like to really be evacuated.

Over the course of the day, children created gas masks, used rations to make apple crumble, cross-stitched and made mats. The whole day was soundtracked by a CD of wonderful WW2 songs, kindly provided by Daniel.

Our evacuee day was a fantastic memorable experience to kickstart our new topic, I look forward to seeing what else we get up to.

Remembrance Day

By A Lenney13th December 2017

Yesterday I had the privilege of joining children, parents and grandparents from our school at the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in Monkton Village. The children were amazing and were a credit to their parents and our school, we were able to lay the poppy wreath on behalf of our school as part of the service. Thank you to all who attended.

We will remember them.

Victorian Slums project

By Mr G Mcintosh12th October 2017

Year 6 have been learning about Victorian slums as part of their ILP. All of the children did a fabulous job. Mrs Todd and I were so impressed by one in particular that we asked the creator to write a blog about it (below). Keep up the great work!

Mrs Faulkner

‘In class, we were asked to create a slum house which was based on the 19th century Victorian slums.  I have designed an alleyway which has three buildings made into five small living areas.  To create these tiny homes I have used: cardboard, boxes, tubes, string, matchsticks, material, tea bags and weeds.  People lived in dirty, crowded conditions and many shared beds.  Times were very hard; people had very little money and poor hygiene. I have created a washing line for each slum to share, with clothes and bedding on.  The pathways are all dirty.  Everything I have used has been recycled, including used tea bags, which I have steeped material in to give a used and filthy look!’

Year 5’s day with our Chinese visitors!

By A Lenney23rd June 2017

Year 5 enjoyed a very busy day with our visitors from our Chinese sister school.

We started the day off with some memory games – this gave us a chance to learn each other’s names and work in a team. As well as games, we constructed and decorated our own butterflies, birds or planes; created optical illusion pictures with our hands and we were also lucky enough to be taught some Chinese writing.

To top it all off, we were able to go and watch the Bede Burn Primary School vs Meiyuan Primary School football match. Bede Burn reigned victorious with an 11-0 win and we were very pleased indeed.

It was an invaluable experience meeting our new friends and it’s certainly one we won’t forget in a hurry!

Day 6 with Year 4

16th June 2017Mr M Ferraro

On Monday Year 4 were lucky enough to have our Chinese visitors finally join them.

During the day they built Towers in mixed groups to see who could build the tallest structure. They also showed their guests some of the games they play in there PE lessons which everyone had a great go at.

It was a fantastic experience learning with all the new students and teachers and I hope we get to experience it again in the future.

Day 2~ joining in with Reception

By J Evans13th June 2017

We were all very excited for our Chinese visitors to join us on Tuesday afternoon. We decided to do two of our favourite things, PE on the apparatus, which we all enjoyed.

Followed by some art. We were so impressed with their Delaunay work we have shared some below.
