Friday night was a late one for our Year 5 class, who went stargazing this week at the Twice Brewed Inn in Hexham. We gathered together with our friends at St Oswald’s School first to watch some videos showing the sheer size of some of the planets in space which lead to a very animated discussion and really ignited everyone’s curiosity and excitement! After filling up on our packed lunches we headed off into the night!
Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side as the sky was very cloudy and misty, making it impossible to see any stars at all. Not to be deterred, the staff from Kielder Observatory, ensured we made the most of it and gave us a very informative discussion all about stars, planets, asteroids and the galaxy and we even got to see some bits of asteroids close up! Then we headed into the planetarium to be shown how the sky would have looked where we were if it hadn’t been for the clouds and how to recognise constellations in the night sky.
Although it wasn’t quite what was planned, we all had an amazing time and can’t wait to learn more about space in our new topic of “Earth and Space”.
