On Tuesday, Years 2 and 3 set off for Temple Park in South Shields to take part in the Foundation of Light Celebration. This was to mark the end of our coaching in school with Scott. We had a fantastic time, joining with another school from South Shields and all the coaches who were there. Everyone took part and all the teachers were really impressed with the behaviour and enthusiasm displayed by all of our children, they never stopped running for nearly 2 hours!!! The teachers were exhausted just watching them. Well done Year 2 and Year 3.
Year 3 have been having fun with numbers. We have been exploring patterns and trying to explain rules to other children. This term we have also been improving our skills at doubling, and have risen to the dizzy heights of multiplying 32 by 48 using this method. We even impressed Mr. Arthur with our skills!
Year 2 and Year 3 are working together in PE to help get Year 2 ready for their big move from KS1 to KS2. We are having lots and fun and showing each other different games and activities.
Summer Term Year 3
Welcome back, I hope that you all had a great time over Easter. Can you believe that we are in the final term of the year already, where has the time gone?
This term certainly looks like being another busy period, with lots of fun and exciting events. Firstly we are changing PE days again, as we are lucky enough to have secured a course of six lessons from SAFC, this will take place on Friday afternoons and so our PE days will now be Fridays and alternating Mondays, [Monday PE lessons will take place when we do not swim on Thursday].
Science, this term, will be concentrating on Plants. I am slightly worried as I have a reputation from being able to kill off even plastic plants, let’s hope that some of the children prove to have green fingers!!! We will be exploring the Ancient Civilisation of Sumer, a first for us all I am sure as this is one of the curriculums newer topics. This area of study provides us with a link to our English studies, as we will be using a book by Mal Peet called The Mysterious Traveller to develop a range of language skills and to provide a stimulus for different genres of writing both fiction and non-fiction.
Maths will provide many challenges throughout the term, we will be concentrating on understanding number and gaining confidence in using times tables and place value to solve problems and demonstrate mastery of the four rules of number. I will be sending more information about this very soon.

Exciting times at the Stadium of Light, so Year 3 thought that we could offer our help! Sadly they had already appointed a coach by the time we arrived so we thought we would just carry on with our day anyway!
We had a tour of the stadium, from very nearly the top of the stands, where some people discovered that they really don’t like heights, to the players dressing room and the chance to run down the tunnel. Sadly Mr. Arthur, they wouldn’t let us bring you a blade of grass back, but we did see the huge lights they use to fool the grass into thinking it is always sunny in Sunderland!
After our lunch we spent the afternoon learning about making healthy choices and what benefits different foods have when we include them in our diet.

I was delighted today as four year three children descended on my office to entertain me with a performance of the poem below!
As it turns out, all Miss Lenney had given them was the poem, the girls decided themselves how to pronounce each line and practised hard to stay in time. I’m sure that you will agree they have done a marvellous job!
Year 3 had a great time visiting Newcastle Cathedral. We found out about the different parts of the Cathedral. You can see us looking at the font which is by the entrance, we found out why the font’s huge lid does not fit exactly on top. We also looked at some of the stained glass windows and had a go at designing our own, We even found a carving of a mermaid, not what we expected to see!
The children were all exceptionally behaved and I was proud to be with them as they represented our school so well.
As you may be aware, we have signed up every child in key stage two for this initiative. There are around 150 million free books on line from some of the most famous and popular children’s authors, all available to read on line or to download! Each child will have their own log in which will allow them to access the books. The website monitors how much and how frequently the children read, and there are puzzles and quizzes to test their understanding of what they have read. There are prizes available nationally but as a school we have decided to provide some very desirable and high quality prizes for the children that make a great effort to read regularly through this site.
Don’t worry if your child does not have access to the Internet at home. Each class will be timetabled some time each week to access the site and read using the iPads in school.

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all. First of all can I say a huge thank you for the lovely cards and gifts, you are very kind and I am a very lucky teacher to work with such wonderful children.
There are a couple of important changes to note about our timetable this term. Due to our cheerleading sessions coming to an end, we have moved our Monday PE session to Tuesday, the Thursday session will stay the same until half term after which we begin swimming sessions, I will send you more details about that nearer the time. This has also meant a change in our spelling lesson, it will now take place on Tuesday, this means that the children will need to bring their spelling books on Tuesdays rather than Monday.
Maths work this term will continue to develop the children’s understanding of number, telling the time, measuring length and weight, as well as using their knowledge to solve problems. In English we will be looking at Ug by Raymond Briggs, learning new spelling rules and continuing to develop and improve reading skills.
