Year 5 have been loving music this half term where they have been learning to play different chords on the glockenspiel. We looked at blues music identifying the features and played our own 12 bar blues tune.

During STEM week, Year 5 worked very hard researching, designing and building their own Christmas decoration.
We then advertised them online ready to sell at our Christmas fayre.
In science last week, Year 5 have been looking at the phases of the moon.
We thought about how the moon reflects the light of the sun and how the moons orbit impacts how much of the moon we can see from Earth.
Breakfast with a Book was a lovely opportunity for Year 5 to spend time reading and sharing books with their families and friends.
We listened to stories together, enjoyed some tea and toast and had time for individual reading.

Welcome to Year 5.
We are looking forward to a super fun-packed year of learning and growing together.
We have lots of exciting lessons planned to inspire and engage your children in their journey through Year 5.

Homework will be issued on a Wednesday and is to be returned to school the following Monday.
We ask that you read with your child for 15 minutes each day. Reading is vitally important to mental stimulation, knowledge expansion and better writing skills.
Reading books to be in school every day so that they can take part in our reading scheme Accelerated Reader.
Although we missed our first ever Forest School’s lesson due to snow, we finally managed to explore the school grounds and start digging up the plant beds ready to grow vegetables in accordance with our topic – ‘Allotments’.
The morning began in the forest where we made our journey sticks which wood serve as a tool to remind us of
where we had been and what we had seen on an excursion around the school grounds.
During the morning Mrs Evans lettuce dig up the beds using all sorts of tools. She made it clear that for us to succseed, we’d have to work together. Mr Ferraro was shocked to hear there was a leek in between the veg which was quickly found and we got on peasfully with the rest of our work. Children could be heard shouting ‘This is the best lesson ever, nothing could beet this!’ which was delightful to hear.
The children have embraced the ‘home learning ideas’ for the allotment topic which has seen a few of them fly home and create bird feeders made from fat, oats and fruit. We’ve watched as many birds have flocked to them daily which has caused great excitement in the classroom.

We can’t wait for our next outdoor adventure!
They say smiles are contagious so what better way to celebrate World Smile Day 2017 than share some of our smiles with you.
A big thank you to all our children for the smiles you bring us everyday.
Year 5 enjoyed a very busy day with our visitors from our Chinese sister school.
We started the day off with some memory games – this gave us a chance to learn each other’s names and work in a team. As well as games, we constructed and decorated our own butterflies, birds or planes; created optical illusion pictures with our hands and we were also lucky enough to be taught some Chinese writing.
To top it all off, we were able to go and watch the Bede Burn Primary School vs Meiyuan Primary School football match. Bede Burn reigned victorious with an 11-0 win and we were very pleased indeed.
It was an invaluable experience meeting our new friends and it’s certainly one we won’t forget in a hurry!

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all! Firstly we would like to thank you all for the lovely Christmas wishes, cards and gifts we received. It was very kind and thoughtful and we hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families.
This term we have a lot going on and we hope the children continue to show the same commitment and efforts in order to make the progress they are capable of.
In English this term we are reading ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ by Tom McLaughlin. Much of our work will be based around this story and we will be doing lots of drama, reading comprehension and grammar work in the hope to get some quality written work from the children. The children loved last term’s book, ‘The Imagination Box’ and it was lovely to see them so engaged and keen to listen and take part in the work based around it. We hope to see more of this over the next few weeks.
In Maths we are focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages with a big focus on the children being able to apply the skills they learn through problem solving and reasoning activities. The children are working hard in maths and learning that it is ok to make mistakes and in fact it just makes our brain grow!
Our topic this term is South America with a focus on Rainforests and we will be doing a lot of cross-curricular work within this. We will be doing some map work and finding out what lies within South America. We hope to find out about rainforest habitats, the animals that live there, the different plants and the structure of the rainforest itself. Within this topic we will be doing some reading comprehension work, some leaf sketches, animal paintings and hopefully be able to create our own mini rainforests along with some writing links in there too.
In Science the children will be studying ‘Properties and Changes of materials’, where they will look at states of matter, changes of state, reversible and irreversible changes and materials and their properties. There will be a lot of practical work and scientific investigation which we’re sure the children will love.
P.E this term will be a Wednesday afternoon with a gymnastics coach but it is advised that children have their kits in everyday in case we do other P.E activities linked to other subjects.
Computing will see the children working with a program called ‘Scratch’ on a counting machine. PSHE will focus on democracy where the children will learn about British values and the rule of law.
R.E is based around what we know about the Bible and why it is important to Christians.
Music the children are working through a scheme called Charanga where they are give the chance to explore music is many different ways.
In Art this term we are looking at Matisse, under water and sky pictures as well as many links to our topic South America.
We’d like to thank you for your continued support and like to remind you the door is always open if there is ever anything you feel you’d like to discuss. Here’s to a successful 2017 for all.
Many thanks
Miss Smith and Mrs Smith
Well done and thank you to all the year 5 pupils as they have started this academic year with a bang! They have returned to school engaged and ready to learn and we are so impressed with them. They are all working hard and proving they can do anything when they set their mind to it. Keep up the amazing work!
Special shout out to those parents who have connected to our fantastic new app Seesaw, the children love it and it is a great way to see what we get up to in the classroom.
Thank you all for your continued support.
