Easter Eggs!

2nd April 2015Mr G Mcintosh

DSC_0607

Another truly amazing crop of egg designs!  It was so hard to pick winners in each class, the amount of time and effort that had gone into the creations was phenomenal!

Some of the eggs can be seen here, I couldn’t get all of them on, I will retry after Easter…

Red Nose Day 2015

13th March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

A massive thank you to all of the children and their families today who helped us raise £394 for Comic Relief!

The children all looked great wearing bright red, and what more fitting day than to launch our new school PE kit, which is now bright red!

Check out the red costumes and face paints here!

World Book Day

6th March 2015Mr G Mcintosh

Thursday saw Wally, Gangsta Granny, Horrid Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and many more of our favourite book characters turn up for school!  Of course, world book day was with us again.

The children all looked fantastic, huge thanks to all of the parents, grandparents and carers who worked so hard on the costumes to make their children look so amazing!

Mrs Todd also organised a ‘bring and buy book sale’ which meant that most children went home clutching a new book, and we raised £153 to help replenish our school library stock.  Again, thank you for your kind donations.

We have lots of photographs to share, and once they are collated from all of the cameras you will be able to see them here!

Speed table update!

3rd March 2015Mrs J Peel

We are on fire in Year 5 this term, with more and more pupils completing the speed table in under 5 minutes.

Our previous record was beaten by Lexi who managed it in an impressive 2 minutes 32 seconds! However, Callum T has swooped in and taken the crown with only a 1 second gap, so our new record to beat is 2 minutes and 31 seconds!

Other speed table champions include, Jake with a personal best of 3;11, Amelia at 4:14, Rhian at 4:15 and Daniel at 4:57… Come on the rest of you, learn your tables!

Read for My School

23rd January 2015Mr G Mcintosh

As you may be aware, we have signed up every child in key stage two for this initiative.  There are around 150 million free books on line from some of the most famous and popular children’s authors, all available to read on line or to download!  Each child will have their own log in which will allow them to access the books.  The website monitors how much and how frequently the children read, and there are puzzles and quizzes to test their understanding of what they have read.  There are prizes available nationally but as a school we have decided to provide some very desirable and high quality prizes for the children that make a great effort to read regularly through this site.

Don’t worry if your child does not have access to the Internet at home.  Each class will be timetabled some time each week to access the site and read using the iPads in school.

For more information, and to access the books please visit http://www.readformyschool.co.uk

Chinese Visit December 2014

9th December 2014Mr G Mcintosh

As you know, we have been lucky enough to welcome children and teachers from Meiyuan School in Futian, Shenzhen in China to Bede Burn this week.

They arrived on Thursday afternoon and have so far visited Newcastle city centre (to see a pantomime), York and Edinburgh.  Monday was their first day in our school and they had all sorts of fun working with our children in key stage one.  The Chinese children were fascinated by our colourful displays, that children’s work was on the walls and how small our school is (they have 1,600 children in the school and 50 in each class!)  Perhaps the most surprising discovery was that the children were delighted to find that we had “real grass” on our field as their grounds are all artificial.

We have more fun activities planned in school and afterwards that will allow our children to learn more about the Chinese culture.  If you are attending the key stage two show on Tuesday then you will witness the signing of our ‘sister school agreement’ which we hope will allow us to forge even firmer links with our new friends in the East.

A visit from Gobi…

21st November 2014Mr G Mcintosh

IMG_0691 IMG_0692 IMG_0688 IMG_0690Following his first visit, over 18 months ago, Gobi Ranganathan from the Charity Shine came

back to pay us a visit.

After a very long journey Gobi eventually made it to Jarrow in time for assembly where he told the children about his sporting life playing badminton and about his charity work for Shine.

The children enjoyed seeing the medals from the World, European and British championships and Gobi’s national shirt.  With the news that badminton has been recently classified as a Paralympics sport, we hope to see Gobi competing in Tokyo in 2020!

House Mathematics Competition

20th November 2014Mr G Mcintosh

This morning, the four houses competed for the second house trophy of the year, The house Multiplication Tables Trophy!

Each team consisted of one child from each year group from 3 – 6.  They then competed in a series of mathematical, multiplication based challenges, racing against each other.  Things were very close after the third round and got closer still when Miss Lenney added on the infant scores.  To gain points for their house, each infant child was given a mathematical challenge to complete at home, if they brought it back in they were awarded a point for their team.

Tensions ran high.  The crowd were silent.  The anticipation could be felt, pulsating in the air…

Miss Lenney (not milking the crowd at all!) announced the places in the traditional reverse order…

Finally, the hall exploded as Durham were announced as champions!  Durham’s house captain came to congratulate his team and fellow house captain before the trophy was proudly pinned to their house board.

A massive thank you to all of the children for taking part, and to Miss Lenney for organising the event.

Stay tuned for the next competition in the new year, who will win that one..?

Children in Need 2014

14th November 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Once again, the children at Bede Burn have supported this amazing charity.  Children have donated money to come dressed as their favourite superheros; Iron Man, Superman / woman, the hulk, Miss Lenney, my Gran… were just a few of the outstanding costumes. The children were also invited to bring in their own favourite bear bandaged up, just like Pudsy.

A massive thanks goes to Mrs Peacock who has, once again, knitted her legendary Pudsy Bears for the children to win in a raffle.  I know that children who have long since left Bede Burn, still have one or two of her knitted creations lurking in their houses!

It was lovely to see the children’s delight when they won and this year we had a lot of first time winners.  For more pictures of the day click here.
