We have been busy bees crafting over the last couple of weeks in Year 2. We started by designing a puppet then we decorated and sewed it together.
We also designed our own pirate flags.

In English at the moment we are transforming the well loved story we’re going on a bear hunt to our own we’re going on a treasure hunt story. We started by learning and acting out the story we’re going on a bear hunt and have now planned our own obstacles that we will face, when finding hidden treasure on a deserted island.
We can’t wait to finish writing them! More pics to follow of our super-duper stories.
What a noisy afternoon Year 2 have had! We had great fun learning and singing pirate shanties. We chose instruments to play along with songs and performed them to the class
🙂
Year 2 are really enjoying our pirate topic this term and had great fun making their own treasure maps. Lots of children have even made their own maps at home.
We made keys for our maps first, making up our own symbols and naming them. We then tea bagged our maps to make them look old. Once the maps were dry we created our own treasure maps adding symbols from our keys.
They look fantastic and everyone was super proud of their map!
I am loving all of the treasure maps the children are making at home. Thank you to the parents who are spending time burning the maps to make them look old, they look great!
We worked together and helped Mrs Franchi follow instructions to make Hardtack biscuits. Hardtack biscuits are a simple biscuit that pirates ate in the past. This also helped with our measuring knowledge and we recapped that when we measure capacity we measure in millilitres and litres, and if we are measuring weight we measure in grams and kilograms. We will be writing our very own instructions to make Hard Tack biscuits for other pirates to use. If you would like to try a Hard Tack biscuit feel free to pop into Year 2 and use our instructions. 🙂
We had great fun turning into pirates and finding out new pirate facts! We even got to wear our own pirate hats!!
We also followed instructions to dance a pirate prance!
Year 2 had great fun spending our earnings from the Christmas Fayre. We travelled to Vue Cinema in Gateshead on the metro and took our pack lunches with us. We had a mini adventure, but the fun didn’t stop there as they produced some fantastic writing when asked to write a recount of our trip.
Mrs Kiely loved the VIP seats!
Hello and welcome back! I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter break. Our new topic this term is pirates and the children are all very excited to get started and learn lots of interesting facts.
We will be linking English to our topic this term and will start by thinking about instructions. The children will be learning to listen to and follow instructions, firstly by playing captain’s coming then making a pirate hat. We will also be making hard tack biscuits (pirate food) and writing our own instructions for other pirates to make them. Pirates is a great topic and can have lots of engaging writing links. (please see topic overview for further information)
Reading and spelling are also still very important and we will be continuing with our weekly spellings focusing on the different spelling rules. Please ensure your child’s reading books and diary are in on their reading day so we can ensure your child is listened to frequently.
In maths we are focusing on number, place value , addition and subtraction, then moving onto recapping multiplication, division and fractions. We will also be focusing on measure, applying skills and knowledge we have learnt throughout the year and using them in different situations.
We are all very excited for our first summer trip tomorrow to the Vue Cinema, Gateshead to see Zootropolis! We are using our earnings from the Christmas stall to pay for most of the trip.
For information on all subjects covered this term please see pirates topic overview.
Thank you!
Mrs Franchi
