Year Five

Spring term

8th January 2015Mrs J Peel

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all a happy and healthy 2015.

Thank you very much for all the lovely cards, gifts and well wishes sent in before Christmas. Very thoughtful and much appreciated. 🙂

This term in Year 5 we are going to be working extra hard to improve all aspects of our learning. Times tables and spellings are, as always, very important and need a massive push and I would appreciate any help given to the children at home to support their learning.

In English this term we are looking at ‘Other cultures and traditions’. Children will read texts connected with China, India and Japan. They will read a traditional Chinese story and make links between this and Chinese culture. Further work will feature plays and traditional stories from the Indian tradition and non-fiction about the death of Mohandas Gandhi. They will read haikus and relate them to Japanese culture, learning about their structure and rhythm.

In Maths we will be looking at negative numbers, addition and subtraction of large numbers of money, long multiplication, adding and subtracting fractions, reflections and translations and mass.

Topic this term is ‘Shang Dynasty’ and this will link closely with our English topic. I know the children thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese visitors so this will be an exciting and fascinating topic for us.

Lots to get through this term but we’re Year 5….we can do it!

7th November 2014Mrs J Peel

The speed tables record in Year 5 has been matched this morning by Lexi!

A time of 3 minutes and 47 seconds held by both Callum T and Lexi.

Well done and keep up the good work.

Everyone else…Learn your tables and try to beat this time. I know you can do it!

Speed table champion!

6th November 2014Mrs J Peel

In year 5 we have been working really hard to improve our knowledge of times tables and having speed table competitions daily.

The current record to beat is 3 minutes 47 seconds which was achieved by our very own maths whizz Callum T.

Keep working hard year 5 and see if you can beat this fantastic time… (I know you will as I know how competitive you all are)

Lights, camera, action!

22nd October 2014Mrs J Peel

Year 5 have been reading ‘Arthur High King of Britain’ by Michael Morpurgo this half term. The children have really excelled themselves and shown not only can they understand and analyse a text but also interpret it in their own way.

The children rehearsed scenes from the story and made them suitable for a younger audience. We tested how suitable they really were by performing them in front of the Year 2 class. Both classes loved it! Year 5 were quite the ‘drama kings’ and Year 2 were a fantastic audience. A lovely afternoon had by all, sharing our Oscar worthy work.

Toys, Toys and more Toys!

22nd October 2014Mr G Mcintosh

Year 2’s topic this half term has been all about Toys. We have enjoyed exploring old and new toys and looking at the similarities and differences. We used The Tiger who came to Tea to create our very own stories, which we named The Toy Who Came to Tea. We also planned and created an information page about our own favourite toy. We had great fun sharing them with Year 5!

Year 5 also had great fun acting out scenes from King Arthur. We felt like we were in a theatre! Well done Year 5.
