Y4: DT and History

This week, in DT, Year 4 created machines that would have helped the ancient Egyptians build the pyramids.

They looked at different mechanisms, such as pulleys and levers, and considered which ones to include in their prototype.

They finished off by evaluating the effectiveness of their finished product.

This week in English, Year 4 have been on a determiner hunt!

Some children identified determiners from a set of words, some children selected the most appropriate determiner for different sentences and other children rewrote the sentences with a different determiner in order to alter the meaning.

Mummifying tomatoes!

In history, Year 4 learned about the mummification process which was used in ancient Egypt. Year 4 demonstrated their understanding of mummification by following the same process used by the ancient Egyptians to mummify a tomato.

First, the children cut a slit into the tomato and used a spoon to scoop out the innards! They placed them in cups but the ancient Egyptians would have used canopic jars. Next, the children cleansed the tomato. After that, the children filled the inside of the tomato with salt and bicarbonate of soda (the Egyptians used natrum) in order to preserve it.

The children then wrapped the body in toilet roll strips (instead of linen) to make the tomato resemble the mummies we recognise today! Finally, the children created their own own sarcophagus, adorned in hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian motifs, to help send their tomato mummy safe on their journey to the afterlife!

Y4: Maths

This week in Year 4, children are starting work on division.

Today we divided 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. We tried a range of methods and picked the ones which worked best for us. Some of us used base 10 to share the number into equal groups. Some of us used our times table knowledge to partition numbers into different multiples.

Next week, we will be moving onto formal written division.

Y4: Art and History: Ancient Civilisations

This week in Year 4 we have been creating prototypes of our ancient Sumer-inspired sculptures as part of our art topic ‘Statues, Statuettes and Figurines’. We learned about wire armatures and used them to support our structures. Next week, we will be completing our Innovate task and will create our final structures.

In history, Year 4 have been learning about the important features of cities in ancient Sumer. The children used this learning to design a city of their own, making sure it had all the essential features.

First snow of 2022! Year 4 snuck out for five minutes of fun during the first snowfall of the year. We were so excited to make snow angels and catch snowflakes on our tongues!

Y4: SMSC/Geography: Christmas Around The World

For Christmas Around the World, Year 4 learned about Mexico. To begin with, we made paper lanterns to decorate our classroom ready for our Posada party (a Mexican tradition where children knock at their neighbours’ houses pretending to Mary and Joseph, asking if there’s room at the inn). We learned about what Mexican people eat at Christmastime and tried some traditional champurrado, which is a spiced hot chocolate. We also tasted some nachos, salsa and refried beans. We ended our party with a Mexican party essential – piñata! It was a brilliant afternoon and we even learned some Spanish too!

Road Trip USA

As part of our new topic, Road Trip USA!, Year 4 completed our school orienteering course. Working in partners, they had to use a map of our school grounds to locate markers. Each marker had information about a US state and the Native American tribe that once lived there. The children were so impressed with our new extended forest garden and orienteering resources!

Some of the children were surprised to learn that they are familiar with some of the Native American tribe names. Our memorable experience has really got us excited to learn more about our new topic.
